I picked up one of these interesting characters.....

Cousin Willie's stainless steel hunting and fishing knife. "Stainless Steel Japan" on the tang.

It's supposed to lock, but the locking mechanism is broken or worn to where it won't properly lock anymore.

Very interesting Jim, good idea but with a broken lock could you actually use the saw like that? :dunno:

I suspect that its not a saw back, but a fish scaler. I've seen other folding fish knives with a scaler on the back of the blade or even a second blade with that pattern.
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

Yes it is a fish scaler. Not sharp.

Does anybody know about how old these might be?

And in case you can't read the inscription, it says:

"Cousin Willie's stainless steel hunting and fishing knife"

And there is a picture of a moose to the left of the words, and a picture of a marlin or swordfish to the right of the words.

On the reverse side it's all plain except in the corner where it says "Push here to lock"

Originally, this pattern was produced by Schrade as "George Schrade's Stainless Steel Hunting and Fishing Knife" in the '20s and '30s when stainless on knives was a really novel thing. In the '70s or '80s, it was copied, and made in Japan as your Cousin Willie knife. And I have neither yet. Have been meaning to pick up the original Schrade for some time.

Good looking knife. Maybe you can fix the lock?...
