Surge Torx Rotate along the blade
on: April 11, 2021, 02:06:05 PM
Hello everyone, I have a question.  I recently bought a Leatherman Surge, as soon as I used it I noticed that when I open or close the plain blade the Torx screw rotates together with the blade, both in the opening and in the closing, when this happens the Torx of the saw / file (the opposite  ) does not move, this happens only to the Torx of the plain blade.  Another thing to note is that when I try to tighten or loosen the blade torx with the screwdriver the torx of the saw also moves in the same directions as the Torx that I am applying the screwdriver to.  Is this normal or does the tool have a problem?

Hi I just checked my Surge and it does the same but it doesn’t cause any problems or won’t undo itself
Hope that this helps  :tu:

It may be missing a washer  Not a very common problem but I am sure it happens  If it has a washer then I am not sure why it spins with the blade  :dunno:

I hope you can get it sorted out :salute: but if not you may either need to swap it or send it un for warranty :-\

If you want to tighten or loosen the pivots you need a torx bit or screwdriver on both sides as one screws into the other. Leatherman put Loctite on the threads so you will first need to heat the pivot area (a few seconds over a lighter should do it) to free it.

If you're only tightening the pivot to try to stop it rotating I wouldn't bother.

Mine doesn't rotate but I don't think it's a problem.

I missed that you might only be tightening with 1 driver  You have to have a driver on both sides as Synco said :salute:

Hmmm but when you rotate the knife the pivot on that side rotates but not the pivot on the saw/file side?
Odd.

Not a real problem however there is an easy fix, apply some loctite to the thread.
