Material of Rebar Phillips driver and wire-cutters?
on: April 20, 2021, 02:29:13 AM
Do we know what the fixed Phillips of the Rebar/ST300 etc material is?
And the wire-cutters were 154CM but they only say "premium steel" now? So what is it?

I've always presumed it's just 420HC, hardened slightly softer than the blades.

The drivers are 420hc but the replaceable cutters could be anything now  I know at one time they said they were 154CM but that was a pretty good while back, cost cutting could have changed what they are made of but I have no idea how to determine that ???

It says 440c in the answer  That makes them just a little better than the 420HC anyways  Thanks for that, Juan :salute:

I always thought 440C was kind of brittle, so the 154CM would be a better choice for wire cutters

I am not a metalurgist but always thought that 154CM would have been harder because of it's use as an upgraded steel on the Charge pe blades  I am wrong often though :D

No biggie ;) as I said above, it is usually me that is wrong :D

Hardness depends on how you temper the steel after hardening, but if I'm not mistaken 154CM is tougher than 440C. Atleast that is what I remember, but I could be wrong.

Turns out they are pretty much the same, 154CM has better edge retention only.

Thanks!
I guess I should have bought a few replacement pairs back when they were 154CM.

I find this really interesting actually.  I always wondered why they chose 154cm in the first place, but I'm not a metallurgist either.

Ironically, I've had my Rebar for 8 years and beat the hell out of it, and never once replaced the wire cutters.  There's a small ding from cutting a coat hanger or something years ago, but they still work perfectly.
