Extra kit.
on: May 05, 2021, 03:34:12 PM
Hi everyone. I've just purchased a Champ (not my first SAK but more on that later) and nylon sheath. Upon inserting said knife into said sheath I found a sewn in loop and a small amount of space to the side of where the knife sits. My question is this, what other unusual kit do you think I could store in the small space without replicating what's already on the knife. Preferably useful stuff and maybe different to the survival sets. So thinking caps on everyone.

You don’t say exactly how much space you have to work with, but my first thoughts would be a small flashlight, Bic lighter, or ferro rod.

Hi Nate. Not very scientific but about a fingers worth albeit a tight one.

Vic offers a small sharpening stone that might fit into this space. But I guess that's survival kit stuff, isn't it?

Probably any of my original thoughts, i.e.
  • Small flashlight, probably 1xAAA
  • Bic lighter (full size or mini)
  • Ferro rod

would work.

Another idea is a Pocket Wrench II.  They are no longer manufactured, but are a great compliment to a SAK, and do show up on ebay.

A Streamlight Microstream (or similar size AAA battery flashlight) should fit nicely.

A Victorinox sharpening rod, eye glasses repair kit in a tube, or single cell AAA light.

I'm leaning a bit towards the torch if I could find a small enough one of a decent quality (recommendations welcome) failing that the emergency cash is not a bad thought.

You can't go wrong with a Maglite LED Solitare. https://maglite.com/collections/led/products/solitaire-led-flashlight

Fenix E01 V2.0 would be my choice.  Small, light, water- and impact resistant.  Multiple brightness modes let you choose between high output and long runtime.

I've done the research and comparisons between the suggested lights and have ended up ordering a Fenix E01 V2.0. I'm hoping to squeeze in a 6" Niteize gear tie as well if there's room.

Thanks everyone for the tips and advice.
