New Member and first time SAK owner
on: May 02, 2021, 04:21:45 PM
Greetings from South Carolina all,,,, my name is Jason. I've been lurking the last couple of weeks reading about SAK's. Figured I'd go ahead and join in and introduce myself.

Through a series of events, I found myself fishing a couple of weeks back and didn't have a pocket knife. For whatever reason, I had left it at work that day. Sure enough, I got my line all tangled up and had to cut a knot out. Being a denture wearer, biting monofilament is no longer an easy thing. Luckily it was light line and I was able to rub it against a semi sharp object and cut the knot out.

Priority one after I got home was to get a pocket knife in my tackle box. I had never liked keeping one in there before, cause they tend to get neglected and rusty. But I had the perfect candidate in mind,,, a China made Swiss Army clone that I can't even remember where it came from. I dug it out, cleaned and lubed it,,,, then decided to carry it for a couple of days. Being a four layer it was a bit heavy, but I kinda liked carrying a SAK as an EDC. The toothpick was especially helpful (dentures :D) The corkscrew,,, well,, not so helpful. I managed to get my thumb stuck under the point with very strong spring tension and had a heck of a time getting my thumb out of it. The puncture wound is healing nicely now. But overall, I did like the SAK concept.

However,,, I prefer quality toys and before I knew it I had ordered a couple of Victorinox SAK's from the Bay.

Last week my order arrived, a pre-owned Tinker and  Tinker small with advertising on it. No more cork screw for me by golly!! I gotta say,,, I REALLY like the Tinker small. The 84mm size makes for a very nice EDC experience. The one I ordered did not have a key ring, which I like,,,, but I missed in the auction that it didn't have the toothpick and tweezers either. That is a real bummer. No fault of the seller,,, I just missed it. That said, I am already looking for a donor to replace the scales with some that have the two scale tools included.

I am very lucky that I live within 10 miles of the state's largest fleamarket. It doesn't matter what you need,,, it will show up there sooner or later. I cruised through there yesterday looking to see what SAK's were available. I wound up bringing home a Wenger Esquire and a Commander. and a Vic Classic,,, all for $5.00.

So far, I 've used the toothpick lots, the tweezers to get a metal sliver out of my finger and the flathead screwdriver to clear a jammed stapler. I think this might make a pretty handy EDC. Can't believe I never owned one in my 50 plus years,,, now I've got five,,, and bidding on another.

Well if you made it this far, thanks for your time. Hope I didn't bore you. Looking forward to learning more.

Welcome aboard, Jason. I’ve carried a SAK for 45 years, so I definitely understand the attraction. Enjoy your new found love and hold on to your wallet!

Welcome to the forum Jason.  I agree; the Tinker Small is a very pleasing SAK to carry.

Good to have you.  Another Tinker and Recruit 84mm aficionado here.  I keep a Recruit I the kitchen full time and a Tinker small nearby at all times.

Welcome GA1Dad,

At last you have found The Way, The Truth and The Light - The wonderful world of (Swiss) SAKs - And of course MTo
No-one (at least IMHO) should ever be without a SAK in their pocket !!  ... or tackle box  ;)

Very nice introduction story - I loved it -
Yep the 84 (or 85) mm are a very nice pocket carry and surprisingly more compact and light than even the 91mms

We are looking forward to having you around - And don't forget we love pictures here  :tu:

PS. You seem to have a pretty good handle (pun ???) already on the world of SAKs and their uses and models etc - You'll fit in well here.
PPS. SAK steel is so well polished that as long as you dry it and oil it a bit, it should not go rusty - even in the tackle box!!

If only,,, I've always been a traditional pocketknife fan,,,, so the Alox scratches that itch perfectly.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcomes. I have a feeling I'll really enjoy this group. I like the activity you guys create with the badges and challenges. Keeps it fresh and fun I suppose.

LOL,,, right! At least these are small and store easy. I also have a collection of vintage Coleman lanterns,, they take up quite a bit of room. These will fit right in the drawer with my other pocket knives.

Welcome

Tinker Small is a really nice EDC. I used to rule out any SAK without scissors but this one has changed my mind a bit (well that and carrying super thin and light Classic SD Alox for scissors duty  )

Welcome to the forum! If you are into small SAKs for everyday life, you might want to have a look at the Compact. It's about the size of the Tinker but comes with scissors. Be warned though: once you have tried Victorinox scissors, it's really hard to ever go back to a scissors-less model (I tried a few times but to no avail).

So which one is next on your want to buy list?
