Well, I have a stove*....so I made some coffee........

(Image removed from quote.)

I don't think anyone chose to use these 'coffee singles' for his or her GSMRE. I'm a little surprised by that.

I went with the traditional MRE choice of instant coffee for my GSMRE. For me ( and Barry, I'm sure ), an MRE isn't an MRE if it don't include some "Coffee, Instant, Type II". So I selected the civilian equivalent for my GSMRE.

When I go camping, I usually take tea bags with me. I love tea and find it to be excellent in the morning in the woods. However, and this is just my personal quirk, I find coffee ( with milk and sugar ) to be a bit more warming. As a result, in cooler weather with frosty mornings expected, I'll pack along these coffee 'tea bags'. I find they work really well ( not as tasty as an espresso machine, but everything tastes better in the woods, right? ). As a bonus, there is no extra gear to pack or clean. I just empty the grounds out and pack up my trash.

(Image removed from quote.)

The instructions say to soak in 6-8 oz of hot water. Well......my smallest mug is 10oz, so that's what I use. I steep for 3-4 minutes. And, I find that this combination works well. The resultant coffee is a bit on the weak side, to be frank. This is not Navy bridge java. But, if you wanted a sterner cup of rocket fuel, I suppose you could double up on the tea coffee bags. I haven't tried that.

For ease and convenience and coffee that tastes better than instant, I think these are worth a try!   :tu:

* It is a complete coincidence that I chose to use the marvelously fun and speedy Kelly Kettle "Scout" to make this mornings hot water. We're expecting a warm day to day and I didn't want to heat up the house brewing up one cup of coffee. ( Mrs Nix did take advantage of the abundant hot water to fix herself another cup of tea. ) I was not trying to tempt Sos24 or McStitchy in any way.

I was tempted and did make coffee outside.  Because of your Kelly Kettle use, I was inspired to change it up a little and heated the water in my bottle then used my french press bottle to make the coffee.

There was a time I seriously considered getting a Kelly Kettle, because of how efficient and durable they are.  But thankful now I am satisfied enough in my set up that I’m not really tempted in that realm.

I have not tried the Folgers bags but I know my in-laws love them when traveling.  Before getting the set-up I use now and when I want to keep thinks small and light, I use the Primula Brew Buddy.  It is like a hybrid between a pour over and the coffee bags.

From my perspective, the Firebox and Kelly Kettle cover different activities.  The Kelly is my car camping ( or power outage ) option. My mid-sized Kelly is just too bulky for anything other than luggage carry. It might work well for a canoe trip, in a chuck wagon, mule pack, or car.  Backpacking.....not so much.

The Firebox seems ideal for light weight, solo camping or backpacking. It would be a great idea for a bugout bag ( especially being a multifuel stove ). The Firebox just seems like a great 'woods-bumming' stove.

I don't know about the Kelly Trekker. It is obviously smaller and more portable.

Well....I still have to wait a few days before I can try the new Firebox and give a more informed opinion.....

I honestly missed this whole thread until half an hour ago.  Everything I picked is shelf stable, about 2500 total calories, and is honestly probably more than I will eat in a day.  It all fit nicely into a 1 gallon zip lock freezer bag.  I didn't get a chance to test out my camp stove but I'm sure I'll manage even if I have to build an open fire.
edit, added tea bags for caffeine.

Oooooh.....Mr Cheese..... a day late.

I had anticipated that there might be a late entry or two, and so had devised a penalty for laggards who arrived after Storage day.

But, first, does your entry meet the requirements for the challenge in a way that your skimping on a day of storage does not compromise the integrity of the challenge?

Yes, I think so.

You've taken a bit of the C-ration approach and are heavy on the canned goods. Everything else is clearly shelf-stable for an extended period of time. The possible exception is the cheese of which your possessiveness is renowned. But, thanks to extensive, scientific, testing in this thread, I think everyone can agree that your valued cheese is shelf-stable. So, I conclude that your entry does meet the stability requirements.

Furthermore, you are to be commended for assembling the minimum required 2400 Kcal on such short notice. It speaks well to your level of real-world preparation that you can assemble a GSMRE in mere minutes. Bravo!  :salute:

As to the late entry penalty. When thinking of potential tardy entries, I conceived a penalty for the would-be participant having to consume a portion of grits on Chow day. Grits, a food so heinous that even the U-bout crew will not suffer to consume it, salt or no salt. I see you've anticipated me there and gracefully accepted the penalty, saving me the discomfort of being a punitive referee. Thank you; nobly done, sir!  :salute:

Because you have acted with integrity and conscientiousness, I vote to accept your entry. My co-sponsor, Mags, will have to weigh in and vote in unanimity before your entry can be official, but I'm optimistic.   :tu:

I appreciate your fair consideration and I accept your penalty.  However, you know I'm southern right?  That means I eat grits.  Instant grits are an abomination that I only kept for emergency rations, but it's still not that much of a penalty if you want to add anything else.  I was only a few minutes late. :dunno:

Your courageous and stoic acceptance of the Grits penalty does you credit and is more than sufficient penance in my book. I consider your GSMRE to have been in a state of "dispersed storage" on storage day.

I can only hope that Mags sees things in the same light and doesn't feel the need to dole out some rough "U-boat justice" with respect to this matter.

Probably make me kiss the gunner's daughter (tied to a cannon and caned or flogged). Or, put me in a bunk (put me to bed) with the Captain's daughter.  The Captain's daughter was most likely a club or short length of rope that a sailor might be smacked with as a motivator to stop shirking and get to work (referred to as being kissed by the captain's daughter).  So, to be put in a bunk or to bed with the Captain's daughter presumably means to be beaten to the point of unconsciousness.

While I quietly ate my supper of salted oats, reflecting on my day, my reverie was broken by a single ping emanating from the elderly ZX81 home computer we use here on the u boat.

The ping alerted me to an incoming electronic mail from Alan K ( I believe the K stands for ketchup). Upon perusing the communique it appeared that Alan Ketchup was seeking my approval of his belated entry into the GSMRE challenge to the tune of $7, a barely used copy of 'Salty Sailors Monthly (Xmas 1986 edition no less) and 3, yes 3 nearly in date Twinkies.

What else can one say except : You have my blessing Mr Ketchup. Welcome to the fray
