Tomahawk shopping musings
on: April 30, 2021, 05:40:27 AM
I had been looking for a tomahawk last year and lately my interest was rekindled. I looked around again, and was reminded of why I did not buy one back then.
I was thinking of the CRKT Woods Chogun. I liked the size and shapes. Then I watched a dozen reviews. It will come unsharpened and with no sheath, and will most likely require refitting on the handle. Is this CRKT or Ikea? Just how much work do I have to put in to finish this product?

Then I looked at Cold Steel ones, the Rifleman's, Pipe hawk, and trail hawk. Again, no sheath, sharpening required, and possibly fitting.

I am already paying around double the price down here. Why on Earth do Australian sellers not also sell the sheaths? Fine, they do not come with sheaths. At least have the sheaths so I can buy one for specific models.

So, no hawks for me. I'll stick with my Fiskars X5 which came with a great sheath and at a reasonable price. I might get the X7. Not too much markup and it comes with a good sheath.

Yeah, prices for tools are a bit ridiculous here. I don't have an X5, but I do have an X7

Have you looked at any of the SOG offerings. I have a few of those. They come very sharp and with a sheath.
A little Leatherman information.

Funny you should mention 'hawks, RP. I was just using mine in the garden this morning.  :tu:

Fuzzy sent me the Rinaldi head. I made the handle and mask. Fun project. You don't need leather. Nylon fabric and a little plastic would work. I've seen cardboard and duct tape masks. A wooden mask might be interesting.

Thanks. It was pretty simple to make.

I made a template from....card stock or cardboard...don't recall exactly...to make sure the geometry worked out. Aside from that......dead simple.   :tu:

I can attest that Nix does first rate leather work.  I'm not quite so industrious, so I made blade covers out of leather business card holders. https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,76782.0.html
