For someone who regularly opens packages, this replaceable blade tool would be comvenient… Especially gunk from packaging tapes… Main blade could therefore be left clean for food prep…

Thanks for the info Reinier :like:

This is my problem. The pruner blade is very versatile. It can open packages, quickly annihilate clam pack and cardboard, and is very effective on plastic strapping. Plus, it's good for pruning and harvesting (duh!); as well as cutting and stripping wire.  However, it is usually only found on some Alox models; but is RARELY offered in 91mm form as the secondary blade (replacing pen blade) on a small handful; some Camping-shield models done nearly 50 years ago, and a limited edition sold only through Smoky Mountain Knife Works ca. 2005-6 (Master Gardener) in small numbers. The 58mm pill band cutter (orange peeler) is great at package opening duty as well. So, we have two tools that work great for this job.  And, if dropped from Alox, or certain smaller 84/91mm models w/corkscrew (or nothing, like the Recruit), you'll lose Phillips ability.

I love the old Picnickers and Outdoorsman models for that pruner blade.  Last I know of them is c.’80.

One more peeler option is in the 74mm. But I can’t say I’ve used those for much more than oranges.

:worthless: :dunno:

At least we know to be on the lookout for the announcement. Something to look forward to at least.  :dunno:

Ooo I like that...wonder if one of those would go in a 91mm?

Ha!  That was my first thought also!

Nothing more announced in this?  :dunno:

I was thinking something would have been updated or announced for the holidays.

Seems odd. The can opener already is a great package opener. Feels a bit like replacing a SAK with a Spyderco flipper. It might be a bit better at one thing, but you're losing out on the can opening, screw driving, etc. Unless it's a package opener/screwdriver or something.

Maybe it'll be a claw type can opener? Those generally work well as package openers.

Of course, the small blade works even better.  :dunno:

"Confirmed" by the VSAKCS guys (who, in my experience, are actually more reliable than Victorinox). A new model (most likely "Companion") is in the works. Vic Spain (not officially Victorinox, seems to be reliablish) has a mock up of it shown here. If correct, it'll be a Climber with file in place of the small blade, and the new tool in place of the can opener.

This looks interesting.  The file in place of small blade also looks appealing to me.

The real question IMO, is what can the package opener do. The can opener: opens cans, tightens screws, serves as as larger/secondary hook, and also as a secondary/"safer" blade. It looks like the package opener will include a similar screwdriver tip, but if all it can do is drive screws and open packages slightly better (presumably maintaining the secondary blade use) then I don't really want to lose that much functionality.

If that mock-up picture is any where near the final version, it will never be in my pocket or collection.

Same here. It strikes me as a downgrade.

Yeah the mock up is terrible - But I am sure it won't look like that IRL.

Sounds interesting - Would like it if it has a file instead of the 2nd blade ..... à la Wenger

And woo hoo ..... Another name re-use to confuse us all.

I would also hate to lose any of the existing can opener functionality to gain a package opener, especially on a tool that already has a knife blade or two.

However, if Vic would basically take the existing can opener blade, sharpen the back, and make it slightly concave on the back side, then package opener functionality could be added without losing anything.  I think someone here may have even done a mod like this.

Several people have done so, including Felix Immler:

They could do something like the Felix Immler sharp hook mod on the can opener.
This was always my suspicion, especially as he is a machinist and SAK modding enthusiast who now works for Victorinox.
Can't say I'm that much of a fan, as I've used hooked package openers before and not found them any more useful than a standard blade.... and yet, most of the cans in my house don't have ring pulls, which is why my can openers see almost daily use.

It is hard for me to get excited about a tool that is specialized to do a task that I am having 0 problems with when using pretty much any of my Saks. Whether its the 91mm awl, 93mm awl, small blade, big blade, can opener, scissors, hook knife modded can opener, or choking up on the pruner blade my package opening is solid as can be. I open a relatively large amount of boxes and packages too.

the awl or can opener serve the same purpose as a package opener tool. Completely unnecessary tool. It will probably be put on a 3 layer cellidor 91mm knife and the only people that will care are collector sheep that won't use it anyway and they will buy almost anything that is from Victorinox.

I like it.  Filing my nails, opening packages, and cutting with scissors are probably the functions I use most.  I already have climbers and a bunch of knives with openers, so this is a welcome variation,

I’m seeing an awful lot of strong opinions on a tool that none of us have seen, let alone used. In fact, the most any of us have seen is 3D-ish mockup that is, at best, fairly crude.

Personally, I plan to keep an open mind and wait and see.

That is the 3D model I was referring to. It is not a picture of an actual, physical SAK as far as I can tell.  :dunno:

Yup, pretty much this. You can awlready use the can opener as a package opener.

(Image removed from quote.)
It's redundant for us ; we French come equipped with an integrated bottle opener in our little finger (inspector Gadget-style).
And you can just saber the bottle !

Well, whether it will be a good tool or not, I don't have any idea at all.

But I'll say this - it won't look quite like the 3D mockup we've seen. If it was as thick as it looks in the mockup, the tool wouldn't even close! I have to imagine that, whatever it is, the tool will have to be roughly the same dimensions as the current can opener, right?

Yeah the mockup looks rough, which is understandable because it is a mockup. I am sure the tool will be refined and changed. The upside of the companion is at least Vic is introducing new blood… 91mm file and package tool. May not be for everyone, but I would like a file that drops into 91mm mods to play with.

The amount of people on Reddit saying the cap lifter should be replaced by the combo tool is a bit of a surprise. If they went with a combo, I could imagine the package opener would be just as thin, which would make for an interesting very light duty layer.
