Utility Knife Collection.
on: June 13, 2021, 03:18:43 AM
Not sure why I like utility knives so much. I am sure a big part of it is the worry free exchange a blade system. No fuss, no muss. Replace the blade when it goes dull. Yes, the convenience factor is a big draw for me. More so however, is the variety. They come in so many different packages, functions, shapes, etc. It is amazing the differences these little knives have from each other. A part of my liking them is the variety.

Here are my 3 drawers full of utility knives. I have fixed utility knives, folding utility knives, automatic loaders, a wide range of manual loading mechanisms. I could go on and on.

Restoring vintage utility knives is very popular. The Stanley 199 is an oft copied utility knife with many of the copies being more ornate than the original.

Recently I found myself also drawn to utility knives for the above mentioned reasons - having a sharp blade without having to spend time on the stone. In my work I've always used them and found the ones that suit me best to be these, because once I turn that screw it pushes the plate against the blade and there is no movement in any direction. I really appreciate that.

And I thought how great it would be if I could have a decent folding utility knife. So I got a few but sadly all of them have quite the play in the blade. And I don't mean the folding part, I can deal with a bit of that. I mean the part which holds the blade doesn't hold it steady, it rocks in all directions. The biggest disappointment in that regard was the Milwaukee fastback as it was worse than cheaper ones. I did tune one of the cheapos so there would be a screw pushing the blade down and it works decent, allowing no movement in the blade. Only downside is if I turn the bolt just a bit more than it needs - it pops the nut I've glued in the bladeholder out . Here are some pictures, the white stuff is superglue + baking soda  :D . Oh, and if any of you know of a folding utility knife that has no play in the blade - please share  :pok:

Great collection Chako and Ray.

A utility knife is such a nice tool to have.  I have a couple for reasons stated.  Its neat to see such a variety and love the colors they come in as well.

Picked this one up today only because it is a very unusual one.Nicely made with a Zytel handle and a locking blade. The blade has a thumb stud and is sharp both on the curved area near the point and the front. The large curved section I believe is used to clean paint rollers.First folding putty knife I've ever seen. The point was a bit buggered up but some judicious shaping with some 320 grit sandpaper and some oil smoothed it out nicely.

Every time you post some pics of your collection, it's like a trip to the museum of old, strange and beautiful forgotten tools.
