108mm combo tool in a 91 or 93mm frame…
« on: June 27, 2021, 04:54:08 PM »
So the question is simply…has anyone tried and managed this? I really like the tool and it would make for a really great 2 layer SAK. I suspect that it’s more likely to go in a 93 if at all because the 4th pin of the 91mm seems like it might get in the way more.

I assume you mean the saw/bottle opener/big flathead tool?
I don't think there's any chance that will fit in either the 91 or 93 mm chassis.
Considering that the saw basically takes up all the length of both, the 108 and the 91 mm Vic, it's obvious to me that this couldn't fit without heavily modifying the 108 mm tool.

It will work, however…. The problem with the 108 combo tool is it’s to long to be helpful. The torque required to use usually ends up with a broken saw blade :/

If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Update: so it turns out it goes in a 93mm fairly easily. You so need to cut a new pivot end and and drill a new hole and thin it slightly if you at using the opener spring but it you shorten it right it sits really nicely on the spring and you just need a minute mark spacer for the other end to keep the tension on. This works fine but not the most elegant solution so so will be redoing when I get another 108 tool to use. I do have a Victorinox 108 but didn’t want to take it apart and it doesn’t have a file so I used a very cheap Mil-Tek version which is not as good quality but seems to be a high carbon steel as it sparked like mad when cutting.

I’ll do more pictures of the assembly when I redo as it all fits together remarkably well.

I think maybe it’s quite long for torquing hard on the screwdriver end but I don’t feel the saw would break in normal use or while using the bottle opener. I’m liking it.

The best alternative to the Victorinox 108mm, quality wise, would be a GAK 1 or 2 from Adler.
But, in good condition, they're almost as expensive as the Victorinox ones. Although maybe you can get one with the main blade in bad shape, since you're only after the multi tool anyway.

Other than that: Great Job!
I mean, if you have to work a really hard stuck screw, a pocket knife wouldn't be the first choice anyway, so I wouldn't be too concerned about the leverage/torque issue.

This is it closed by the way so you can see it a pretty neat fit. Might grind the screwdriver tip in a bit better as a if final bit of fettling. ;0)

Tidied it up a bit and made it function better as well as being able to fit the saw cover on now too. Lots of new spacers to get everything even and tight when assembled.  :climber:

I didn’t mean like ‘factory fresh’ or like new! I just meant built with parts modded to like factory-like, but then used/worn. I still like the approach and final product whatever you’d call it.  :) I often say resto-mod.  ;)
