Thinking in terms of clean blade vs. dirty blade, it probably makes the most sense to use the small blade for the dirtier tasks and reserve the large blade for cleaner tasks, since the large blade is a much more useful size for food.
...and with that elegant summary, this debate is now over
I really do find the small blade is safer for most jobs.
This is pretty much the rule I follow. The small blade on my SAKs often times have packaging tape adhesive stuck to it. I'm annoyed if I have to clean the large blade before I use it to core/slice an apple or any other food.
I'd have fewer scars if I thought like that.
I've carried my Pioneer X for long enough that I use the large blade on any given SAK by default. I can appreciate the mentality behind using the small blade more, though.
On the 93mm knives, I tend to use the awl for a lot of tasks (e.g. cutting tape on packages), and reserve the blade for tasks that need truly require it.
Me too - I'll also cut cardboard with the awl quite often
This is why I really like the electrician. The small blade is perfect for most of my needs. Now if Vic would make an Electrician-X I'd be ecstatic!
How about this?
