Chuck Yeager (memorial) Challenge 2021
on: July 11, 2021, 08:11:16 PM
Welcome to the Chuck Yeager memorial challenge!

“Unfortunately, many people do not consider fun an important item on their daily agenda.
For me, that was always a high priority in whatever I was doing.”  -- Chuck Yeager

Born 23 February 1923 in West Virginia, Charles E. Yeager went on to lead a remarkable career as an aviator. He started flying in the Second World War, becoming an ace while flying the impressive P-51.

He was shot down over France, but managed to escape and evade with the help of French resistance, the Maquis. Despite a ban on having downed pilots fly combat missions again, Yeager was able to talk his way back into combat duty. He subsequently shot down a bomber headed for England….

Yeager went on to become a test pilot and was the first pilot to break the sound barrier on 14 October 1947, in the X-1 Glamorous Glennis at Mach 1.05 at 45,000 ft (13,700 m). He truly had “the right stuff.”

General Yeager passed on into the wild blue yonder on 7 December 2020.

In addition to being a pilot and leader, Yeager was an avid outdoorsman. He honed his skills as a boy growing up in West Virginia where he helped put food on the family table.

Yeager appears to have favored a small pocket knife, a tool he put to regular use either while hunting or while escaping back to friendly lines. During one interview at Shot Show in 1992, Yeager reported that he was a fan of the Victorinox Executive. Apparently the Vic Exec was all the knife he needed for two week backpacking trips into the Sierras to go fishing.

This history is the reason we did the first Chuck Yeager Challenge several years ago. It was a fun challenge then, as were subsequent repeat challenges.  When the Executive’s most renowned advocate died last year, a number of us thought it would be befitting to run a memorial CYC challenge this December.

Seems somehow appropriate that Chuck is gone and Victorinox is discontinuing the Executive. However, even if Chuck hadn’t endorsed it, the Executive is still a SAK worth having in your collection.

If you don’t have one already, you might consider using this challenge as the perfect excuse to obtain one and test it out, as well as a great way to honor a legendary man and his famous knife!

Rules:

➢  Carry and use the Victorinox Executive exclusively during the month of December.
➢  Post a photo daily of your Executive daily. Bonus points for using the Exec to clean a Golden trout and photograph it.
➢  If you have to use a tool other than the Executive, stand at attention and explain yourself.
➢  On 7 December, please post a shot of your Executive along with a “parting glass”. ( Does not have to be alcohol, but it shouldn’t be empty. )
➢  Participants who compete the challenge can apply for the 30 Yeager badge.

Off we go….

As an ex-air force pilot and a long-standing admirer of Chuck Yeager, it would be special to participate in this challenge.  :salute:

Excellent!

CYC is always fun, this one maybe marked by a bittersweet note, but I'm looking forward to it. I wanted to get the thread up in time for folks who don't have an Executive time to find one.

....while they are available.   :(

I thought The Right Stuff was a great movie. Long, especially for its day, which was kinda cool. I thought the book was even better.  :tu:

My dad was a WWII era Navy pilot, and loved reading about the heros of aviation.  So, assuming I can find a suitable
Executive.  Sign me up also, though I'm fairly certain that no Trouts, Golden or otherwise will be in reach, for me.

Well, despite the Boss Ladies ire, I also won my bid, which was half what I bought the other one for.
Pretty cool looking knife with a pewter shield honoring Newport News Shipbuilding.

I'm pumped now, at least till she gets home. 🙄

Y'all remember I said that I didn't forsee a trout in the challenge?  Well ebay has an executive, with a metal trout inlay shield, up for auction.

Doris must have got a collection because she's the one I got the Newport News one from.
