Day 05

Making some beer brauts and grabbed some bolillo rolls. ( like small french breads, it's a southwest thing ;-) )

The Exec made quick work of cutting. Lunch turned out great!

Very nice!

Any pointers for a whittling newbie?
I'm only a little more than a month into it.  I highly recommend these items.
Then some basswood.  And that's all you need to get started.  A hook knife is handy if you're going to do spoons.

Day 5 Bonus
I finished whittling my first spoon.  I did use the Executive on some straight parts along with a dedicated Flexcut blade, and needed to use a hook spoon for the bowl.  Hopefully that does not disqualify me.
Here is a before and after photo.

That spoon looks fantastic! :ahhh :like:

Day 5 (catch up)

I am on a constant look out for the 'right kind' of sweetener to go with my coffee, and lately I have been using this Monk fruit sugar as a sugar substitute.  At least it is more natural, and slightly heathier than regular sugar and the fruity taste of this sugar does make the coffee more interesting.

It is a very handy flashlight,

It is rechargeable and has 3 brightness settings, 38 lumens, 145 lumens, and 380 lumens :D
I always think we have a huge lumens surplus, I still remembered 60 lumens was all rage with SF incan flashlights, and now we even have 380 lumens in such a tiny package.  Crazy!

They're good  :tu:
Same size like the SwissCard ones  :pok:

Stitchy, great comparison!

On the bright side Tasky you'll have some great inspiration when it does arrive

Day 04

Quiet day because I needed my bushcraft knife "just in case" wading through our fen. And I didn't want to lose my black Executive to a bog.
I think that's a TBS knife if I am not mistaken, how did you like that?  Looks to be a pretty good value knife.

Day 5

Working some more on the right technique to open bottles with the orange peeler, I found that it's sufficient to bend the rim outwards in just one place. Once it's bent enough for you to slip the tip in all the way to the top of the bottle, you can simply flip the cap off. The cap then looks like in the picture.

It's pretty quick to do it this way, but you have to concentrate. I failed to do so once, and as soon as I had become careless the Executive's orange peeler immediately drew blood.

When tending to the cut, I thunk about why I edc SAKs. It's to have the proper tool ready for all those small chores you are presented with in daily life. Instead of ripping apart or gnawing through things, or using your key as a makeshift saw to cut something, the right SAK gives me a proper tool for all those little jobs. A civilized way of doing things. For me, carrying a SAK is about not having to resort to workarounds. That's why I like and carry them.

And it's in that respect that the Executive falls short as far as I am concerned. Comforting as it is to know that it can be used to open a bottle in a pinch, I know of other ways to get the cap off a bottle. So that's not the point. The point is that I carry a SAK so that I don't have to think of creative ways anymore to solve a problem for which a dedicated SAK implement exists. For me, the fun in chosing an EDC is to find a SAK that's as small as possible while giving me all the implements I might require in the course of my average day. This is why SAKs without scissors just don't work for me (unless I carry the missing tool elsewhere), and it rings equally true for SAKs without a blade or without a bottle opener: I might be able to work around their shortcomings, but if I have to do that, what's the point in carrying them in the first place?

A good writeup!  I think that's kinda why we all participate a challenge in the first place.  To find out whether a certain tool is right for our use, and if not, any creative workaround to sustain the rest of the challenge.  Naturally, any minimalist 58mm or 74mm will be more challenging than the more equipped multi-layered SAKs.  But I too do agree, it could be a hassle in a long run to constantly rely on workarounds, especially if it is just a common everyday task.

Simon and cbl, I agree with you both, which is why the Executive will never be my favorite SAK. Its tool set is just too limited for the way I like to use a SAK.  I like to have Classics and other small SAKs around and I find them handy, but I usually have other tools close at hand so I'm not so limited.  Trying to use the Executive exclusively has been difficult.
Same here, I don't open can and bottle every single day, but do need it once in a while and even though I know there's a good chance I could make it work, it is surely less than ideal than a regular 91mm model I that I use to carry.

You really did an excellent job on the spoon!  I will show my first spoon I did awhile ago in the next pic. :D

GF, just to add in a few extra few cents, I find the carving tools from Mora are all really well made as well and some of them are even perfect for daily task.

Day 6

Executive posing with the first spoon I made, and a few Mora carving tools, protection and knife roll.  Most tutorial would suggest newbie(like me) to get a pair of slash proof glove, but just to be extra cautious and knowing how clumsy I may get, I did get a sleeve to go over my wrist and arm too.  On a second thought, I would recommend light chain mail glove too, because it's somewhat stab proof(which those fabric ones may fail to do) and great for oyster opening too.

Why not go all the way and put on full chain mail armor? This way you will be protected against all eventualities, including a bunch of Swiss army knights raiding your home
