Thick grinds on pocket knives

Hi there,

today arrived a new Böker Barlow Prime.
Unboxed it with great exspectations, fit and finish and walk and talk is great.  Good knife overall...

... but...

Why on earth is the tip so thick? Its about 1mm at the tip and edge, making for a large angle there.

For comparison a pic of my Pioneer blade.

Note: this is not a tacticool fixed prybar.  This is a slipjoint gentlemans knife.

This is IMO a  major problem with current folder line-up. Every folder has to be capable to double as axe, so they have the grind of an axe.

And no, it seems to have no relation to the pattern of the knife. Because if it is illegal to have a locking knife, you still need one that can split wood, right?
Never really gotten the "hard use knife" craze. I also never seen someone using an expensive knife on a job-site (commonly they carry a Hultafors/Mora or something with exchangeable blades).

Not liking it either.  I used to think some makers were afraid of thinner edges.  Was their heat treat done correctly?  Were they worried about burnt edge?  Was it more work?

I agree with this.  I also think it allows for looser manufacturing tolerances.

I want a nice thin edge and point on my blades.

I have noticed that pocket knife blades are getting thicker.  There seems to be an increase in "cleaver" type blades and I wondered if it is a general trend to move to thicker spines.

I recently bought a Kansept Bevy folder (heinnie Heynes special edition - a nice thing) but I bought it knowing that it have a thick blade with a steep angle flat grind - compared to a Vic Farmer for instance there is a quite big difference

Trends in the knife industry seems to have gone to the cleaver blade.  I dont know if its still as prevalent as it was.  The thicker blades are a no go for me.  I do appreciate Victorinox and choices they make with their blade stock.  Very reasonable IMO.
