Day 17 continued
The Leatherman Skeletool also failed.  It didn't even cut as deep as the A377P.  It would bite and get stuck.  Again I gave up after a couple of minutes.

The Schrade U.S.A. CH7 successfully cut through the frond almost as quickly as the W100P.  This was no surprise to me as I have had this knife for over 20 years and I know its capabilities.  Interestingly enough, the serrated section of the CH7's blade is the same length as the A377P's serrated section and the serration pattern looks similar.  Perhaps the overall greater size of the CH7 made a difference as with the W100P.

In any case, I know which of these 4 knives I can use in the future if I have more palm fronds to cut.  Next I will try cutting rope, but that is for another day.

Eating straight from the package? Or will you apply some heat?

I did apply some heat. In a frying pan instead of a grill.

Day 17
I've carried each of these knives as part of this challenge and today I wanted to show you all that there are serrations that work and serrations that don't.  I like serrations for cutting fibrous materials such as rope and palm fronds.  Today I tried to cut a palm frond.

The W100P quickly and easily cut the frond.  Excellent combo edge with very sharp serrations.  The additional leverage of it being a fixed blade knife with a longer blade may have contributed to its success.

The A377P failed.  After a couple of minutes I had barely scored the palm frond let alone made any meaningful progress.  I found that odd because it is the same pattern as the serrated edge on the W100P.

continued in next post.

That's really helpful. It's hard to tell what serrations work best for what task. I'm curious how the CRKT Veff serrations function.

I owned a non-serrated Fossil briefly before deciding it was too big for me and trading it off.  I don't have anything with the Veff serrations to test.  They look very aggressive but there's not many of them. :dunno:

DAY 16

Opening a Pelicase today (expensive work toys inside)  ;) MP600 cut the seal  :tu:
Curious mind loves to know what inside this, anything with this kind of label bounds to be interesting.... :D

(Image removed from quote.)
I'm beginning to prefer a combo edge in a large blade like this Spyderco Resilience, and a plain edge in a smaller blade.  With the large blade, you get a big expanse of both types of edges which makes either useful depending on need.  On a smallish blade, like a Delica, the plain and combo portions each are pretty small and not quite as useful.

The plain edge Spyderco Resilience Lightweight S35VN was released today, but I am holding out for the release of the combo edge.

https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details/C142BL/Resilience-trade-Lightweight-CPM-reg-S35VN-trade-/2095
Never really much of a fan of serration, but if I were to choose, I'd rather to have it like the Vic Soldiers where they are in the front instead of the back, I think...

The technical name for the device is bleepy type thing, according to Surge who has to use it.  Probably because it makes bleepy type noises as opposed to the machine that goes, "Ping!"  If the device that makes bleepy type noises ever goes "Ping!" I think it means someone is in a lot of trouble.

(skip to 1.30 to cut to the "pinging")
FYI: This not what our "ping" machine is used for  :dwts: :pok: :twak: :ahhh

No sir, the knife stays closed. It's very easy... You just pull it out of your pocket and use it.

I daresay it's easier than a SAK since you don't have to unfold any tools.

You just have to hook under the bottle cap at the 2 o'clock position instead of 12 like a standard opener or 6 o'clock like a SAK opener. From there you just rock the handle back and slightly toward the center of the cap, and off it comes.

I haven't really handled it enough to form any opinions about its capabilities, especially in comparison to a Wenger Ranger (which I have never held).

Opening broccoli seeds.  Two tablespoons in a Mason jar, rinsed twice a day, gives you a quart of sprouts in about five days.  I keep three jars going.
