Help identifying and dating a pocket knife
on: August 03, 2021, 02:39:55 AM
SteveC's post of his 301 Stockman made me think of a similar-looking pocketknife that once belonged to my grandfather.

Can anyone help me identify and date this knife?  I assume it's a "Frontier" knife model 4434 from it's markings.  I looked online, and I saw a post saying it's an "Imperial"?  Here's some pics:

Also, I want to clean it up, but I'm wondering if I'm better off leaving it like it is.

Also, this small knife was my grandfathers as well, but there is even less to go on.  A Boker?  A tree symbol on one blade:

The bottom one is a Boker Two bladed Congress (clearly reads H Boker und CO Solingen) similar to this one:

According to this  ( https://i.imgur.com/Pd5S2ht.jpg ) its around or pre WW2.

Here is some info on your Frontier. Some were made by Schrade and some by Camillus for Imperial.

They were made between 1978-84. I would lightly clean off the rust with some WD40 and steel wool or a brass brush on both knives.  Oil the joints and clean the liners.

I'm not sure which thread this belongs in, so I'll just post it here on my first post.

I had two more folding knives packed away with the rest of my grandfather's stuff.

Since you showed me that these knives can be dated by their blade stamp, I did a little searching and found this:

Assuming this is correct, both are from 1946-1956.

Now comes the work of carefully restoring them.  I'm going to start with the youngest one.

Can't really say without seeing the tang stamps.

I did a little restoration work on the youngest of the four.  First I used some penetrating oil, then I cleaned up the corrosion with Hoppe's 9 and brass brush and nylon scrubber, then finished up with a little metal polish.  I didn't get everything, but I was trying to go light... I can always clean it up more later.

Thanks!  I did a lot of research first, so I almost felt like I knew what I was doing.  I didn't do a very good job in the blade joints, so I need to find something very narrow to scrub that area clean.
