Knipex Cobra XS Water Pump Pliers.
on: August 26, 2021, 01:51:21 AM
I came across a few folks lauding Knipex as an EDC item worth wearing both on various social media and forums. It got me curious about the smallest of them all, The Knipex Cobra XS which is only 10 cm long. I just received them in the mail, and I must say, I am very impressed with these. I have a lot of water pump pliers at my home, my late father being a plumber and all. I think he would have loved these. I like how small these are, but how capable they are in how wide they will open. I also love how you can push the pliers together to size them along with a quality clicking mechanism that gives excellent feed back. Yeah, I am really digging these little Cobra XS pliers.

I think I will believe all the positive online shatter and say these could be the perfect EDC pliers, and I can see why a few folks like to pair this with a SAK.

I just received the 12.5cm version yesterday, and they are great. I used them to screw a threaded nipple into a wellhead so that I could mount a junction box for the power connection. And they easily fits in the back side of my Nite Ize Pock-Its pouch.

My Cobra XS is great, but my Plier Wrench is what's really been tickling my fancy.

They are obviously meant for different tasks. What neat tools!

Knipex is the one thing that still has me on the fence about carrying a plier-based multitool.

If I were to buy the Cobra pliers again, I might look for them in the next size up. I have large palms, and longer handles would add an unholy amount of leverage.

Tee hee!

The Cobra XS is the smaller one in my picture. I could have gone with a slightly larger one. The Plier Wrench is the one with the orange handles, and it is the perfect size for me, and works better than my mini crescent wrench.

I believe he means the 5" (12.5 cm) model:

They are the next size up from the Cobra XS.

I found the Cobra XS was just a bit  too small for my (largeish but not huge) hands, I find the 125mm version more useable.  Of course, it might depend on how big your hands are and how keen you are to have the smallest possible pliers.

Seems like they will be as useful as a mini pry bar, a special purpose tool that borders on a novelty.  Short pliers have minimal leverage.  Those jaws look like they open wider then they have the strength to turn.  I suppose you could stick a pipe on the end of one the handles for more torque.  When it comes to tools sizes often matters.  Don't get me wrong, in a tight space they might be the perfect tool for the job, but miniature tool kits only get so far in a full size world.

The real question is do you think you will use pliers or flat jaws more often.  Trying to cover all the bases, I carry 5" Cobras in the tool kit in my backpack, and have 7" pliers wrench at home.  My dad does more work on machinery (nuts and bolts) so I bought him a pliers wrench (can't recall if 5" or 7") and he raves about them.

Being afflicted with KFS (Knipex Fetish Syndrome), I own a full complement of Knipex tools with multiples of some of them.  As for the XS, while it is certainly the best size for EDC, you just cannot get a lot of leverage on it.  And, it does not have the mechanical ratcheting action of the larger models.  So for carry, I prefer a 5" or 6" (that's what she . . .) model, which is sort of the sweet spot between ease of carry and real-world utility.  I prefer the Cobras for carry, though the pliers wrench lineup is awesome too if you have smooth nuts (that's what she  . . . )  that the Cobras would damage.  I have larger models in the kitchen junk drawer and my vehicle.  Honestly, I prefer a SAK plus Knipex to a SAK plus MT.

If you have an extra maglite mini sheath lying around you can actually fit the XS Knipex pliers in there. You just have to play around with the jaws to make them partially open to make it fit all in. Around the 3rd or 4th tooth I think. You could cut out the extra loop and seal with a lighter the edges or keep the loop for belt carry.

Can’t take credit for this idea. Someone else posted this on a different forum. Please don’t hate me for cheating on MTO.
