Which color for a Handyman?
on: August 27, 2021, 06:43:53 PM
I have decided that I want to give the Handyman more pocket time again. It just seems to be the right tool set for me, city as well as hiking.
The question is which color though? Here it is right now:

I am not a big fan of the standard red Vic scales,  and I have certain "right" colors for specific SAKs. For example: Compacts need to be yellow, Huntsman red, and the FX needs to be green. But i am not sure what the right color for the Handyman is. So i am asking the only folks i know that won't roll their eyes when i ask that question.

It doesn't matter if original Vic colors or 3rd party ones. But the scales need to be available with a pen slot.

So let's hear it!

I vote black, or silver tech. For whatever reason I think those look best on the big ones. Silvertech emphasizes the “gadgety” look and black always looks classy.

As I've said many times on other threads, "if it ain't red it's not a SAK" (excepting silver Alox).   ;) ;) ;)

Black. Elegant, classy and apparently slimming on the heftier models…

I think the emerald green plus scales would look awesome on a Handyman.

Second runner up olive alox scales from swissB!

Stayglow. Nylon, so unbreakable. Glow-in-the-dark. And unlike that weird pearl white color most glow in the dark scales are, Stayglows are bright yellow. The second choice would be ruby transparent.

I'm just not a big fan of aftermarket scales. Many cost more than the prices of most common SAK models; new or used. I'm replacing scales on a SwissChamp (broke) and Outdoorsman (they're falling off) as I speak. Both cost me around $30 each, and that's the same cost as the cheapest aftermarket scales I can find.

I'm going to vote for bright pink or light blue.  Both highly visible colours that will show up against almost any background you are likely to come across.

But it's your knife, so just get the colour/s you prefer....

Any sources for the stayglow scales? Or is it easier to buy a stayglow Climber and swap scales?

There's no 'wrong' color for the handyman, which BTW is my all time favorite Victorinox.
Red or black are very good, StayGlow even better and summum would be the scales of the Climber Gold Limited Edition...

I'd be highly tempted by light blue scales  :tu:

Someone I know has a Handyman with black scales. To me, it looks smarter than my red one, so black would be my personal choice.

You can't go wrong with red scales on a SAK. I really like the contrast between the red scales and the shiny steel, especially on a six-layer SAK like a Handyman. It's like a delicious sandwich full of potential!
Current SAKs: Explorer, SwissChamp, Handyman (modded), Climber, Super Tinker, Tinker, Woodsman (modded), Electrician, Pioneer, SwissTool, Executive, Ambassador, Champion Plus
Current Leatherman tools: PST, Original Wave, Wave, Wave+, Blast, Bond, Curl, Style PS, Micra

Black…in any of its guises! Standard black is just fine but I’ve also tried carbon look and black micarta and they all look pretty smart.

I do like colorful scales, but on SAKs with a lot of layer I like red or black.
