Custom Scales // Leatherman Charge +

Put this beauty together earlier in the year.  I need to find a better way to get the pliers back on because I’m really bending the frame with my vise-bang approach.

:like: Nice work on the scales!  I like how you keep tabs on the assembly. I think I have read somewhere of the wooden scales on the Ironwood Charge to crack and break. Beautiful work nevertheless!

Thanks.  I started with stabilized wood and shaped it from there.  A lot of trial and error, and maybe they won’t last forever, but they won’t all break at the same time, so once one goes, then I can begin a new project.  Hopefully I’ll get many years out it.

Maybe I’ll do the next ones out of G10 like yours!

I saw this thread in passing and forgot to come back to it

Great work! That Charge now looks as good as the traditional knives that some of the members own. Just awesome!

Wow.  Thanks!  I’ll have to get more photos of it for my own archive purposes.  I snapped a few shots with my phone just now while sitting in my office.

While I enjoy how it came out, it isn’t what I thought I was getting when I purchased the wood.  For the full name of this stabilized wood and original look of what I purchased, see this screen shot from my original eBay purchase.

Here’s a photo of it on my workbench after I made the first cut.

The handles came out similar to what type of wood it was, at least to me :salute: :like: :like:

Thanks Guys!  This was my first time working with wood so there was a lot of trial and error.  Lol

Random question  Did you ever put the orange handles back on anything :ahhh If not, what did you do with them and would you part with them? :dd:

The black Charge+ pictured is sentimental and what I made this Charge+ from with custom scales.  Because I didn’t know what I was doing and I didn’t want to mess up anything, I bought the orange one to learn how to take them apart and put them back together.

I eventually sold the orange one on eBay.  Cabellas has the exclusive on the orange one.  Sportsman’s has the “earth” colored one and REI has the red one.  These are all G10 scales as I’m sure you already know.

I’d just buy whatever type you want and slap your old scales on there and sell it off.  Cheapest way I’ve found.  I’ve actually made money doing that.
