Leatherman Knife Mod
on:
September 18, 2021, 06:52:22 AM
Not contented with my usual half tool.. I decided to make a knife out of it and no internal tools. Since I have a small-ish stockpile of G10 scales, I decided to put them into good use.
Mod revolved around the Supertool 300 BO blade that I have, it went into a few tools/handles but didn't quite like the look but I didn't want it to go to waste. Went through a few rounds of re-profiling and I think this should be final and it should stay this way for at least a good few years. I have accumulated a number of parts over the years so this is a mumbo jumbo of part from all over.
The obvious, ST300 BO plain edge, Kick screw for pivot ( darken by acid and heat ), Wave for the frame, bronze washers from Charge. G10 for the center layer and scales.
Now for some pics... My favourite sweet spot on my desk for taking pictures..
BO straight edge. The usual Wave blades have a backwards sweep when deployed. In a stock tool it is ok and not so obvious, but when halved, I didnt quite like it. Benefit of using non-stocked parts, adjustment can be made to preference.
The G10 spacer in the center is about 4mm thick. I fashioned a thumb ramp with some jimping for grip. Works and feels great when doing push cuts.
On the other side, its the usual diamond file that I love.
Not so glamour shots. A breakdown of the parts. Its actually very simple.
Cheers!

Very nice mod Sam
I want to do something similar with the saw blade I have left over from my Core. Most of my work is at people's homes adding in lighting and outlets, so I cut a lot of drywall. I love the Core/ST saw blade for doing this work, but not the dust that would fall into my MT. So I am looking to install the saw blade in its own handle so that I can worry a little less about the drywall dust.

Hmmm,
I seem to recall that I still have the other half of the MF to play with.

Thanks peeps!
This mod was particularly fun to play with though it have very limited tools. It feels very much like a knife. Typically for half tools there will be some void in the internal part of the handle. I have made further minute changes since then...
I have spray painted the frame to black with a mix of lacquer and black paint. It feels pretty hard now so I think it should last for a while. The G10 layer was also changed a little, very small change to improve the ergonomics.
Cheers!

Those are so slick!
Looks labor intensive but I might have to make one down the line.

If I have a workshop that would be perfect. All the cutting and stuff have to be done outside my house. So I keep running in and out to get things. Not a particularly difficult mod, just need to get the required things together.

Added thumbstud to the darker one. Non intrusive, subtle and how I like them to be.
