Looking for a small Fixed for (Bird Trout style?)
on: August 23, 2021, 12:46:56 PM
Hi folks,

been through a lot of knives since Ive been bitten by the bug. Tacticals, folders and fixed, heavy knifes and stuff.
But been boiling down my needs to a few basics since the chances of being lost in the canadian wildernes with my gear are alost zero and a ESEE4 is a bit large for most holiday trips with the family.

So here are my points:
- small fixed blade, about 10cm, 20cm overall (4inch / 8 inch overall). bladelength
- thin profile, blade no more than 3mm thick, full flat grind would be a big plus. No Scandis.
- stainless (will see fishing and foodprep and I cant trust my wife with carbon blades...  :twak: ) Dont care about which steel, a decent medium alloyed like 12C26 up to 14C28N or similar would be great.
- quality sheath, both leather and kydex are ok.
- handle material somewhat water resistant and easy to clean (so no fishy smell like my ESEEs have due to the handle material). No plastic aka Mora.
- should have some decend grip and/or finger protection, knives tend to be slimy when cleaning fish.
- Available here in europe / germany.

Boiled down: I need a lightweight, easy to carry, easy to clean, non heavy duty holiday and fishing knive that does a lot of foodprep.

Price tag max. 150 Euros.

Been looking for some options.
- Buck 102 Woodsman: Would have bought one already, but some rumors about not so good fit in the sheath nowadays prevent me from insta buying.
- Grohmann Troud and Bird. Ticks almost all boxes, havent found a full flat grind one in europe yet.

Other Ideas?

Michael

Brisa Necker with full flat grind or Fällkniven WM1 are nice little fixed blades. The WM1 is convex though.

To behonest I already own both.
Blades could be a bit longer, I should change my list to a "4inch / 10cm" blade.

One that come to mind was Casstrome #10.  It is a wood handle but injected with acrylic.

First think that came to mind was this:

Pretty decent and durable, less than €20. Since you said "no scandi" I guess these are out, though...

What about a Eka fishblade?
Sandvik 12C27 steel. It's not quite a fixed blade, more like Eka's swingblade, but it's a thin filet blade that I think would do very good with fishing tasks and food prep. And really inexpensive.

Edit: added link.

Russia sends aide!

$79 Euro https://kizlyar-europe.com/hunting-knives-779/sterkh-1

I bought a Kizlyar Sterkh-1from eBay about 15 years ago and I'm still impressed with it's quality.

Mine is a more tacticool version, also in french Z50 like the current wooden handle ones. It's an incredibly light knife. I still can get over how slim it is and am confident it would never let me down.

Probably should add the Sterkh is a little large if going off your specs but Kizlyar europe show few knives with similar blade profiles in smaller packages with the same blade thickness.

Did a quick search for the OP, don't know whether they are all available in Germany, but I hope so:

Spyderco Bill Moran 3-7/8" VG10 Steel Drop Point Blade, FRN Handles   ~115usd
Bestech Knives Ostap Hel Hedron Fixed Blade Knife 3.78" D2   ~100usd
Mora of Sweden Fishing Comfort Fillet 090 Fixed 3.5" Stainless Steel Blade  ~19usd(I know you said no Mora, but this is really got me curious, really thin grind)
Brisa Trapper 95 hunting knife, N690 Flat Ground  ~140usd  (I think this is a pretty strong contender)

The CRKT Hunt'N Fisch is, in my opinion, close to perfection for an EDC carry but it only has a 3 inch (7.62cm) blade. https://www.crkt.com/hunt-n-fisch.html

Couldn't agree more  :tu:
The sheath fits well, is well made, no rattle and a very secure closure.

Production has been delayed but when the ESEE CR 3.0 comes out it is supposed to be in S35vn.

Update:

Been on vacation for a few days, so late answer by myself.
In the meantime I caught a BRKT Bird and Troud in Elmax with Ironwood handles.
Hit all boxes and I couldnt resist.
(all the others suggested here are still on my list, will see how the BRKT performs....)

Glad you found your dream knife. :tu:

I wanted to suggest the Canadian belt knife, but now I'm too late. :) It does come with the flat ground option.

Just for reference if anyone later will be looking for the same.

Thanks, ive mentioned grohmann knives in my opening post, but the full sized ones are a but overkill for my taste, and the smaller are not available in flat ground here in germany at the moment.

And regarding the dream knife: once you got bitten by the bug, there is no dream knife. Just another step down the rabbit hole.
