Good idea? Bad idea?
on: September 25, 2021, 03:44:33 AM
Thinking about a Walker, but with the metal saw/file in the place of the wood saw. Slim, light, and I'd probably use the metal saw more frequently than the wood version.

Thoughts on this?

What would you use the metal saw/file on? You seem to have a need for it so I'm curious.

Unless you feel like searching for a three-layer model with the metal saw, your best bet would probably be a mod. But if it works for you, then it's a good idea.

@Singh: Well, I find I use the combo tool and the blade most  frequently, but often want to remove a burr, smooth an edge, or whatever. It seems to me the file would be a useful companion.

It might make an interesting first mod project.

We could call it, uh....a Single File Walker?

Great idea.

I like the Marlboro Trail Guide, which only adds scissors/hook and plus scales, and I’ve wondered if I’d like it without the scissors and hook.

And the only thing cooler would be an 84mm version. In alox.

Will you source a (rare) metal file from an 84mm model, or cut down a 91mm to fit?

Yeah, rarity of those 84mm parts is one reason I haven’t torn a couple of mine apart for such mods. I’m always thinking it’ll be the ‘next one’.

Except chocolate and pizza.

There you go again with that logic and reason stuff. We can’t have that here.

A Wenger/Vic Delémont metal saw/file can be used too. Not cheap, but probably cheaper to source than a 84 mm metal file.

Good to know.  I’ve been meaning to rip apart some Wengers to try. I’m expecting to use a Vic Wood Saw backspring and a brass bushing in the Wenger Metal Saw pivot.
