Black Oxide - yay or nay
on: October 09, 2021, 10:50:49 PM
Some may have noticed that I frequently carry Black Oxide (BO) tools. Somehow they're multiplying

I like the looks, and also the connection to the military I guess (brings back old memories for sure).

I like how it slightly wares off over time. It does it gradually. It doesn't chip off like other coatings.

And it's absolutely food safe (it's just black iron oxide).

It also adds a bit of corrosion resistance (quite an old way of doing it actually).

Hmmmm.... if I think about it now, a black non-shiny blade is less obtrusive which can be an advantage over here. Crazy how knife laws have changed over the last 20-30 years  ::)

What's your take on Black Oxide tools?

I don't own any, but not because I dislike that finish. Rather, it's because I'm primarily a Swiss Army knife fan. I would consider buying a black oxide tool (and almost did at one time, but that's another story).

Nay.  I don't like the way it rubs off on your hands.  Besides, I like my tools shiny.
Let the abuse commence.

I get what you mean, I don't like black oxide powder rubbing off onto everything either.
That's why I wipe all new BO tools off with Ballistol before first use. After that initial treatment it's good.

No abuse from me, ETTO and all that.

But if you are a fan of black MTs some were available with a black DLC (Diamond Like Coating) or black TiNi which is quite durable and doesn't rub off on your hands.  But either are very hard to find so don't hold your breath while looking.

It only comes off initially - a quick soapy wash and re-oil and it's fine... But, you're right, it's not shiney.

Anyway, a biggish YAY from me - I love the look of a beat-up BO tool.  :tu:

I :like: shiny just as well

The BO only comes off when the tool is new and as Fuzzy said, after a wash and reoil they are just like SS (well except for the black matte finish that is :D) :tu:

Nope.. for a host of reasons. It's not necessary for tools, it wear off easily, and it's not great at corrosion resistance.

The only thing BO is good for is a finish that doesn't reflect light.

Can't argue with that  :hatsoff:

I didn't enlarge the initial photo during my first read of the post, so I missed the Spirit X. Very nice collections from all!

The black oxide tool I almost bought was a Gerber EOD model. One of the ITs aboard my ship had one, and I thought it was really cool. However, I don't recall why I didn't go through with the purchase. Most likely it was too much for me to want to spend at the time.

The biggest issue I have with black tools (and knives) for EDC is that they are hard to see compared with SS or bright colours.  If you drop a BO tool in the dark then you will probably need a torch to find it.

I was lucky to get a very good prise on the SpiritX over here.
Btw, I think I see more BO Gerbers than any other brand

Not worth the price difference from a regular model, IMHO.
