Wingman package opener in Rebar?
on: December 06, 2016, 09:48:39 AM
How much material do I have to remove? I don't remember it being a drop-in. Thanks.  :salute:

I think I only had to reshape the nail nick side, but it's been ages since I did the mod.  Whatever I did, it was a pretty minor mod job.

It drops right in no problems. Just needs a little reshape for rebar to fully close. Just line it up with any other rebar tools tool and mark.

Pics if you have time  :D

If you aren't dead set against modifying the can opener I sharpened the one on my Rebar and my Supertool 300 with marvelous results :tu: It slices packages exactly like the package opener on my Wingman :tu:

SteveC was one of the first people that I saw that did this and I followed suit and am very happy I did :like:

Oh and good luck if you are going with the package cutter and modifying it :tu: That is something I had rather see them put on more tools than the can opener anyways :D

I find it more useful. HOWEVER, I actually do like the wire stripper on the cap lifter. It's very functional. Even better at stripping wires than my SAK Electrician... so it's a conundrum for me...

LM could make a package opener with the wire stripper on it and that would be an awesome MT tool :like:

ok, that's not too much material to file down. Thanks!  :salute:

Not much at all. You do want to leave a little piece up there for access to the tool. Those wingmans have a much deeper stronger nail nick. You can even just drop the piece into your rebar and see how much it sticks up above the handle. It's not much, but enough to just make the tool not close perfectly.

Cheers man

ok, I have ground the nail.nick spine, so it is flush with the Rebar's handles, when the package opener is closed.
The thing is, what order do the tools go in?

The package opener thickness is the same as the can opener and the medium flathead.

The package opener spine is not as low as the medium flathead. It rides a little higher when folded. The pakcage opener spine rides even higher than the large flathead.
This causes the pliers to ride a little higher, if the package opener is directly beneath it, which causes the handles to have a gap when closed.

Replacing the can opener with the package opener (right next to the plain-edge blade) puts the package opener away from the plier, but the package opener tip pokes out from the handle, where the spring-bar cut-out is. So it cannot go there.

The tools I had there:

File
Small flathead
Awl
Big flathead
Can opener
Blade

Where should the package opener go?

File - Cannot move
Small flathead - Same thickness - broader spine - Pliers higher - handles have gap
Awl - package opener is thinner
Big flathead - package opener is thinner
Can opener - Package opener pokes from handle cut-out
Blade - Cannot move

I have gone with:

File
Large flat-head
Package opener
Awl
Can opener
Blade

When the handles are closed, there is a gap, about 2mm at the very end. The gap is so big I think it made no difference that I ground the nai-nick's spine.
With the package opener opened, there is still a gap, about 1mm, because the large flat-head is underneath the pliers.

If you have done this mod, where did the package opener go?
Did you grind the spine's part that goes under the pliers?
I could mirror the small flat-head or awl's spine, to make the gap smaller.

I'll post pictures tomorrow with the current set-up and how the package opener spine protrudes.

Current set-up, mentioned above.
The package opener's spine protrudes so much, it leaves a massive gap.

File
Large flathead
Package opener
Awl
Can opener
Blade

But wait. Look how the gap disappeared, when the scissors are out.

This means that it is a drop-in, but only if the other side is the default Phillips and can opener.
So, I'll have saw, can opener, Phillips and blade on one side
file, scissors (in place of large flat), package opener, small flat, awl, blade.
That should work. The scissors will take the place of the large flathead, which is what I wanted to remove to put in the package opener anyway. I just dread the reassembly. Those thin washers, they're so thin.

Well, it has been an interesting ride.  :like:

No gap. Isn't it beautiful?

This is the order of the tools, if you want scissors and the package opener in.
Leave the can opener and Phillips side as it was. The Phillips allows the pliers to sink deep in the handle, and the can opener is completely to the side of the pliers.

On the other handle, from the file's side, you want:
File
Scissors
Package opener
Awl
Small flat-head
PE blade

The thumb plate of the scissors and the tip of the awl get in each other's way. The package opener is short, and the thumb plate goes past it.

Removing a tiny bit of the thumb plate allows the scissors and awl to deploy without issues.
If you put the flat-head in the place of the awl, the tip of the flat-head comes more to the middle of the thumb plate, requiring more material to be removed. It is better to have the awl there, and remove just a tiny bit.

So happy it all came together. :like:
All you give up are the lanyard ring, and the large flat-head.

There is a washer between the can opener and Phillips by default. It could have been a figure 8, and serve as the lanyard hole, instead of having the lanyard take up a whole tool spot. That washer is thick enough to be the lanyard hole.

I did it to my second Rebar too!
Lanyard loop out, package opener in!
The implements have to be rearranged a little, but no biggy. The toughest challenge is to put the tiny washer next to the file. Victorinox tweezers are perfect for this, being so thin.

Looking good!   :tu:
I think Alcohol, Tabacco and Firearms should be a convenience store, not a government agency.

Which scissors are in your rebar? They are bigger than the stock ones, right?

Those are the Wave/Charge/Blast scissors but they also come in the knifeless Rebar from the factory  :tu:

So same size as stock

Also, welcome to :MTO: Kederekt :tu:

Yup, those are the standard scissors, found in the Knifeless Rebar, Wave, Charge, Blast, and Fuse. They require no modification to fit in a Rebar, provided you get the tools in the right order.

I had to modify my scissors, because I wanted the scissors and the package opener in. But it's a quick mod to do with a Dremel.
