Good cheap leather treatment available in the UK?
on: August 18, 2021, 07:13:15 PM
As per the title really, I'm looking for something to nourish my leather products, water proofing isn't really a concern, just maintenance. I'd ideally like something on the cheaper end of things to fit the budget, and hopefully wouldn't leave a residue after application.

Any help appreciated

Any stables around? Or even farmers. They have lots of leather gear, they might be able to help you.

Got any beeswax?  I made a preserver that is pretty good ^^^.  There are several recipes for leather conditioner/preserver starting with beeswax.

There's farms and private horse owners all around, I just don't have any personal association/introduction with them

I want to make a batch of fixin' wax (beeswax, coconut oil, lard) at some point, but I was hoping to grab something cheaper and ready made for the time being, this product iss beeswax based and has good reviews, have you guys heard of this brand?

I have a few ready made leather products and all seem to be good.  Application IMO tends to be key.  I heat the leather and apply ( as per product I have ) which seems to really draw in the product.  I have Obenauf HP, Snoseal, mink oil, and a few others I cant think of at the moment.  I use the one I made on my leather sheaths which is also pretty good on the carbon steel knives that go in them.

I say give that one a try and see how you like it  :tu:

Kiwi shoe polish in the tin cans. It does smell a bit bad for a few hours after application but it fades away.

So I ended up picking up Renapur leather balsam from Amazon, it comes with an applicator sponge, is made in Germany and uses Beeswax (I think the primary ingredient), carnauba and jojoba oils.

I'm very impressed with the results so far!

I've not treated everyhtin I have, but so far:

Wallet

Hitch and Timber slip

old wallet (heavily dyed leather)

OG Wave sheath (brought it right back to life!)

Leatherman sheath with elastic parts I keep my wave in

various native american leather pouches

ren fair pouches

My Wazoo viking whetstone necklace

Dishonored hip bag (this was pretty inflexible and a little creaky so looking forward to it loosening. A rivet popped out during treatment so I also had to do a small fix with Gorilla glue gel, which I'm hoping bonds leather and brass together well)

It does darken some leather, but it's more like aging you'd get from handling the leather anyway rather than discoloration. The amount of time it takes to soak in fully varies on the leather, probably a mixture of how the leather was prepared and my inprecise application, but usually takes 30 minutes-hour for most small pieces. I've also learned that treating leather cords and strips is a pain!

Very happy so far and will post some before and after shots later on

Oh and general thought, do all treatments darken leather if not already use darkened? I've liked pretty much how everything has turned out but the missus isn't a fan of how one of the native pouches darkened

I'm no expert, but awl the products I used in awl leather items made them darker, even if awlready darkened by use.

 :dunno:

Oh, and...

General Thought!

Glad it worked out.  I have also found that most things added to leather darken somewhat.  I don't mind as I love the look of leather as it ages and retains oils.

I do like hte look of a darker leather, it's just a shame as it seems that the whiskey colour would be near impossible to maintain over time if you actually cared for it  :dunno:

As promised, pictures!

Happy with how it is, some leathers take super long to soak up the wax, almost like they're laminated or something? The Leatherman sheath was like this.

Also I've only been waxing the smooth side, are you meant to treat the rough side of the leather at all?
