Hook/nail file
on: October 28, 2021, 02:44:50 PM
Does anyone have a comprehensive list of which SAKs have as hook and nail file combined. I did do a bit of searching but without success. Also, as a segue, should we start a club for the Traveler and Voyager? I have a Traveler lite in my collection and feel we owners of such are unloved.      ;) ;) ;)

In spite of my personal opinion that the plain hook should be retired in favor of all new hooks having the nail file, they are pretty few and far between.

Of current production models that don’t also have the metal saw/file, I believe it is only the Compact and Traveler that have the hook with nail file.  Some of the very large models I think have it as well, but it’s a bit redundant on models that already have the metal file.

In recent models, (only) the Compact and the electronic scales (AVT) SAKs have the hook with nail file. Btw, I don't think the AVTs are unloved. They are just uncommon for various reasons (price, cellphones, misconceptions re the scales' durability). Their being recently discontinued will not help their popularity either ;). Which is sad considering how practical and sturdy they are. If you start a club, it's one I will join.

I know for sure the Compact has that feature, but I didn't know about the Traveler. Tomorrow I'll have a look at.my Traveler and see if it is so equipped. Replacing the plain hook with the file hook altogether would indeed be a great move, in my opinion.

:)

It's a Climber with the non-useless hook (with nail file obviously). They come in at least four versions/scale colors:

The white one seems to be out of stock, the orange one looks to be still available.

Hot damn, I wish I had known this before. Too bad the orange one is a Spartan, I have no use for that one (plus I somewhat doubt it comes with a nail file, let alone a hook:-). The white Climber would have been cool though. Hope they will restock it at some point.

Yes, sorry, the orange one seems to be a Spartan based on the description. But the hook (presumably with nail file) is visible in the picture

I would assume the new Swisschamp XXL has the hook / nail file combo as well - can anyone confirm?

That is weird. I double-checked the Traveller and Expedition Lite in my drawer, they all have the hook / nail file as expected. Maybe yours was repaired with a wrong hook?

My Traveller lite has the file hook, as do my Compacts and the mods I’ve made with Compacts (Yeoman and InvesTigator), but my 91mm Golfer/Compact doesn’t, but then it doesn’t have a hook at all.

Quite possibly. I don't know its history, as I got it used (thanks again to Aloha for it).

I figured out why my Traveler doesn't have the hook with file...

It's actually an Altimeter.

The nail file is an almost essential tool in my opinion (maybe why it’s one of the three blades in a classic) so I am a plus one for the file hook as a standard.

Didn’t some of the back side Philips used to have a file too?  The square ones?

I personally am a fan of old school and would love a model with a back side long nail file but alas I have never even seen one in the flesh!

I've owned Compacts in the past that had a hook with no file.  There are no guarantees.

Interesting to know. I wonder when Vic introduced the hook with file? Maybe some models were upgraded as of its introduction.

Edit: As one might have guessed, Sakwiki had the answer: The hook with nail file was introduced in 1998, the Compact was already on the market at that time. So vintage Compacts might not sport the hook with file,  but if you are buying new from a retailer you can be certain to get that nice feature.

Yes.

The long file in the back layer is also a viable option, but those can get pretty pricey.

Nice discussion chaps.

I was thinking there were some other models with the hook/nailfile - But maybe I was just thinking of Reinier's Mammut Climber
Great brand BTW    :pok:    :D

I always thought that nailfile was not really great on the hook - Just OK - Cretainly not great
In spite of that - I agree it would be better to standardise on that, as it does work.

I guess Vic does not do this for cost reasons - Presumably it's expensive to make - and one of the reasons the Compact is so comparatively expensive.
Although still surprising, as Vic do have this obsession with getting as many functions listed for a tool, or model, as they can!

PS. Don't agree nailfile is redundnant if you have the metal file - I really don't like using that on fingernails ..... Just IMHO  ;)

One could argue that "just ok" actually translates to "great" for a niche tool which is included in another tool and does what it is supposed to do just fine.  :)

You could ........
But for me it is 'just OK' ..... not 'great' or even 'just fine' - It's very fiddly to use and does not do a great job

As we have discussed here a few times - All multitool tools are a compromise of some sort over standard tools or even other multitool tools
And for me - this one is a poor compromise

Would I rather have it than not have it ..... given no other choise - of course :tu:
Would I prefer a Classic or (old) Cadet nailfile over the hook nailfile -  Always    :pok:    :D
