New Flea Market Case Project
on: November 14, 2021, 01:13:22 AM
I picked up this 40's/50's Case 11011 at the flea market this morning for $10.00. If I'm honest, I thought I was buying an old rams foot folder, but I was surprised to find out it was originally a hawkbill. Other than the tip, the knife is in pretty nice shape. I can't see any can't see any tool marks or signs that it was reprofiled. If it wasn't for the model number I wouldn't have a clue. Snaps open and closed like an alligator too. Once I get the tip back in shape this is gonna be one sexy apple peeler!!

I wouldn't have picked that out as a hawkbill either. Great knife though, lots of character and lots of life left in it.  :tu:

Great find.
Why is it everyone has better flea markets/antique stores/thrift stores than we do?

Thank you!

I don't know that mine is any better. The thing about mine is it is just a few minutes away and I am able to go every weekend if I choose,,, and I can be there early. I have identified a few sellers that generally sell what I like,, and some even at good prices. But, most folks are asking what I believe to be ridiculous flea market prices. There are a lot more weekends that I go home empty handed than the ones where I score. But admittedly,,, I score often enough to keep me going back.

That's an old Swayback.

At least that's what we used to call them.

Are you going to recondition it GA?

The more I look at it, the more conflicted I am. On one hand that rounded tip drives me crazy. On the other hand, I'd have to remove a good bit of material to bring it back to a "point". Then again,, it is quite usable as is. Conflicted,,, yep,,, that is the word.

Did a little tuning on this project over the weekend. Tried my best not too be heavy handed and take off just enough material for a proper, usable tip. I am very pleased with the results.

Nice find.  I think you did a great job.  In years past I would have let the worser part of me try to restore it.  The better part of me now does "just enough" to get it in my pocket and use.  No need to do more than needed.  Leave a little if you are hard pressed at a later time to do anything more.  Thats the way I see things now.

Such a gorgeous old knife that'll give you years of enjoyment.   :like:
