Custom pocket clip/hangers?
« on: November 22, 2021, 08:40:17 PM »
Hi all,

Is there anyone on the forum who can make some pocket clips/hangers to a custom spec?
Nothing complicated, I just don't have the kit and skills myself.

Cheers,
Tasky.

It might help to give a bit more info with what you are wanting :salute:

I have made some out of copper but tjat is about the extent of my experience with clips :salute:

Hopefully someone can help you out with what you need  :tu:

Basically something like a P7 suspension clip, but double-ended - So effectively an S-Clip, but smaller.
A few commercial versions exist, but they're massive:

I just want a short pocket hanger that quickly detatches from a SAK keyring.
I've kinda exhausted Google searching for existing options, so if anyone can make this or knows of an alternative, I'd be very grateful!!

I can see how that would be very handy :tu:

Olight makes a flashlight clip similar to that and it is handy as well :like:

Never saw one otherwise and I can see how they could be bulky  No idea how to bend one of those.myself but hopefully someone on here can either make it for you or guide you through making one yourself :salute: :tu:

Something very much like that, yeah. Are those ones you made?

A flatter profile would be great, and it'd need the gaps at the tips to be as tight as possible, so the SAK keyring doesn't simply slip out when you sit down.
It's strange to think how something so simple in concept requires so much thought, and how even the tiniest details can greatly affect its effectiveness!

Yes, I made it. Sadly, my only stock is the one pictured. The hooks are easily closed if needed with pliers. If you can not find what you need, let me know if you want it.

This is a simple solution that works well.

That's very kind of you but I'm after several, as they're for both my use and that of my work crew.

P7 clip with a lobster clasp
I tried that at first, but 91mm SAKs sit too low in the pocket like that.  :(
I also had a phase of going through various fishing line clips (snoods, egg-snaps, etc) but the same problem arose.
The other option was literally welding or bolting a pair of P7s together, but I have neither the skill nor the equipment for the former and haven't found suitable bolts for the latter.

How about deeper pockets   ;)

We're stuck with the issue uniform, I'm afraid, although they're pretty standard as far as these things go.
The perfect length would be a P-7 directly on the keyring, but then it isn't quick to remove.

I would try sticking two clips together back to back with some heavy duty double stick tape.

I'd change the tape with two component glue, something like Bison epoxy for metal. A lot of knife makers around here use that to glue handles before riveting them.

Would either the tape or epoxy be strong enough?
I think my mechanic friend has some JB Weld....

If you roughen the surfaces with some 40-80 sandpaper, make sure they are clean before applying and follow the instructions on the lavel I believe that the epoxy will hold. Even better if you have someone to borrow from since you need much less than the ones I've seen for sale.

While not exactly what you asked for, I use a Luck Line Secure-A-Key Clip On.  While designed to clip to a belt, this has enough grip to attach to a waist band, pocket edge or the watch pocket of a pair of jeans.  Shop around and you can find them for $5 or less.  With a little practice you can clip and unclip with one hand.

Didn't knew about this design. I like it!

I recall having both a pack of these and some knock-off versions from Amazon, a year or so ago.
IIRC, the front of the spring clips kept catching on my pocket seam, and at least one actually broke... pretty cool otherwise, though!
