Been using 125 cobras at work for a couple of weeks. When I first got them, I thought they were too small to be useful and a bit of a novelty, but I've been finding then very useful. Really like carrying as a combo with a SAK. Would be awesome if Knipex could somehow add wire cutters to the small cobras.

When I see these pliers with a SAK its clear how small they are.  I'd imagine they are robust and great for jobs on the spot.

I usually carry these two as a set.

I mostly use my Cobras for fasteners and pulling nails (as well as anything I'd normally use Channellocks on).  The 140mm Combination Pliers are for basic pliers tasks--bending and twisting wire, as well as cutting wire.  They can also hold the other end of a fastener when a MT is not on hand. Coupled with a needlenose multitool (and or SAK) and the Pocketwrench II, I think I'm pretty well set for basically anything.

I've handled rusted and damaged water hose fittings, rusted/damaged bolts (up to 9/16), and removed stripped screws with the 125mm Cobras, and I prefer to affix T-posts to the fence with shorter pliers. The 140mm Combination Pliers have cut and twisted all sorts of soft and hard wire, and have been used on nuts in a pinch.  These are "real tools for real jobs" without being an absolute brick in the pocket.

Knipex was the only company who had small pliers that did the job. The smallest Channellocks are about the same size, but don't open up much at all, and are very dainty. The closest models that open up as much as the 125mm Cobra are about 8 inches long--NOT pocketable. Little "toolkit" pliers are few and far between. I had tried a pair of vintage Elliot Lucas pliers from like the '60s, but they were shot, same with a '80s Crescent pair my Granddad gave me.   I tried the 160mm model first, only to find them bulky and heavy (they eventually went in my fencing stuff), and then found the 140mm were just as capable, at half the weight.

Tools fit nicely into cutlery trays. And if you're lucky enough the tray will fit into a tool cabinet drawer.

I got the 180mm aka 7" Cobra and Pliers Wrench.
This means that I have all Cobras up to 250mm, and all Pliers Wrenches up to 250mm except the 100mm one. :ahhh
This means that I have no self control.
This also means that I have to get the 100mm Pliers Wrench. :D

Some 1980s Knipex stuff

After seeing all your new and shiny Knipexes here I thought a few pics of my old Knipex tools from the '80s  be interesting.

All made before the wall went down so marked as Made in W.Germany.

Mostly electrician related pliers with insulated handles. They looked like strawberry jelly back then  :D

These bit the flash once  :ahhh

Thanks Aloha, those were part of my first proper tool kit when I started as an electrician for power/machine control systems. They're still used... apart of the old wire cutter  :P

Very nice loadout! I'll try to take a pic of my dad's old Cobra someday, there are many modifications that where made since then

What's the purpose of the added piece on this one ? a kind of "end-stop"?

Hey, m47mu74nt

it is holding on to the piece that's been cut off, so it's not flying around. These cutters are designed to make a flush cut so that no sharp edges are left.
We used them at repairs on electronic circuit boards (think changing ICs, componemts etc.).
But they work also well on cutting off the remainder of a zip tie  :D

Do you want a pic of it to demonstrate?

Looking forward to see your dads old Knipex to see what's changed on the Cobras  :tu:

I'd been debating a pair of the 125s for some time, as I kept finding situations where the Vic SAK pliers just weren't big enough, although most PBMTs would likely have also struggled.
I decided to test the water with the more pocket-friendly 100mm version:

Nice one Tasky, I am having a hard time deciding whether to get a 125mm or 100mm. Keep us posted :tu:
