First or Beginner's Multitool Recommendations

  Met a guy in his late 30's, does a lot of adventures, sells incubators, yet ,,, never owned a multitool. Oddly enough he claims to have never heard of them.  :o  Which I found odd as he said he was a Boy Scout leader... ???

  With all the advances and new models it is hard for me to decide which one would be best. I prefer the Victorinox Spirit or X, but I would much rather carry a Leatherman TTi just the same. Steel quality on the older Leatherman tools is tough to beat. And if PST were still available I would recommend one for a first multitool. And later, a Wave.
  And while a better multitool would cost a lot more, if it ends up in a drawer the cost would not of been worth it to a beginner. -- Me, I have multitools I've not used laying in a cubby, in the kitchen drawer, even a Wave in the car's toolbox. Skeletool CX on the recumbent trike + bit kit. :D

  Since a lot of you all are current on starter lines of multitools, what would be your recommendation(s)?

The Leatherman Rebar would be a good choice or the Leatherman Wave+ if scissors are important :tu:

A Leatherman Bond is the current analog for a PST and is only $49 US.

For me best all-rounder is the Wave. Has most of the important tools, one hand accessible knives and pocket clip.
The Spirit X is a great tool - Victorinox quality and all the tools besides the pliers are on the outside. Has to be sheath carried (not a problem for me) and doesn’t have an one handed blade (reason for the very close second place). So whenever I carry it I also have a dedicated knife.

Well, not necessarily. If he don’t start participating in a forum. Before I found the forums I loved knives, carried and used one regularly. But can’t recall owning more than two, never carried more than one. When I break my daily driver then I go get another one. And I was pretty happy with the way things were.
Then I found the forums. Oh the new model, oh that brand is the smurf! And things got out of hand pretty fast  :gimme: :gimme: :gimme:

I'd have said Rebar, but the Bond also exists now. It would come down to tool-set, and maybe design, if oho blades are required. Then the Curl/Wave would also be good.

I always suggested the Wave but not will he even carry it?  I think the Spirit is a great choice as well but if they've gone this long without carrying a MT then not sure how likely they'll be to carry it either  :dunno:.

I would suggest buying previously owned since you can get one at a very good price.  Why buy new just to test drive?  Maybe he can find one local in Craigs listings, FB market place, or something similar?

If he carries a pocket knife at all it is only a small step to go from a pocket knife to a Skeletool.  He'll experience the utility of the pliers and drivers in a lightweight package and that's probably all he'll use anyway because he is not conditioned to reaching for his pocket whenever he needs a tool.  If you really want him to have more tool options than the Skeletool offers I would suggest something light and easy to carry, not a heavy brick like the Wave, because that would end up in a drawer. :cheers:

  His wife tattled on him. He does carry some sort of multitool on his keychain. I've never seen it. And supposedly he has had a multitool. No one recalls what it was. If it was a Chinese POS then that would scare most anyone away from a quality tool to EDC.

  Things might change as I use mine around him more. Do not want to spend good money on a sock drawer ensemble.

If you’re not married to the idea of a pliers-based tool, IMO a two-layer SAK can be a great starter MT.  Someone can get used to having some other useful functions in addition to simply knife blades, but in a package that isn’t too intimidating in terms of size, weight, or tool options.  Also won’t break the bank.

I say give him the Victorinox Compact ($59.95) and Leatherman Rebar ($69.95). Both prices from Amazon right now. Tell him this relationship is based on a 30 day trial with these two "gifts". If he chooses which tool is the best all around "mutlifunction tool" then there is hope for the friendship, if not "hit the road jack".
