As titled, I bought a counterfeit Spyderco Paramilitary 2. No, I did not go out of my way to buy this abomination for a research purpose, it was a pure accident, and this sucker will go back.
I took a few comparison pictures between the fake and the real in case someone wants to know how to tell a fake PM2.
- The G10 scales: smooth, feel cheap and plasticky to the touch, with "larger" weave texture
- The pocket clip: the Spyder stamping looks more like a crab with inconsistent line weight. Genuine stamping is much crisper.
- The letter font: pretty much the telltale sign. The fake is taller and not as square-ish. Also "Golden (period) Colorado", whereas a comma on the real.
- Spyderco logo: fake is a fatter bug with a bigger "arrow"
- Marking placements: Sai marking is further and Eric marking is closer to the knife hole (vs real)
- Etching texture: Fake has a rather coarse, grainny texture, like a paint over. The laser on the real almost immerses into the blade steel, you can barely feel it.
- Hardware: spacer and landyard hole are matte on fake and shinny on real.
I hope this helps.
