Day 10 - Minimal SAK

No action for the Floral knife today so just a few observations about the knife - it is nowhere close to the refinement of the Baker's knife. It feels somewhat crude, but handles very well, has strong snap and very sharp sheepsfoot blade (single bevel), good for precise cutting and slicing.

When I was shopping for the knife I wanted to get the older version with brass liners but it was nowhere available so got the current one with alu liners. It feels a little bit too light in the hand to my liking - that's why I wanted the heftier brass version. As well, for eventual carry, it does not fit into the 5th pocket - too long.

More on this for...

Minimal SAK Challenge Day 10

Looks like I'm getting back into collecting farm toys. I acquired this Ertl John Deere Gator a while back. Today I removed the ambulance decals. The WWP Tinker helped press the packing tape down. Being that the decals were stuck down really good, I had to finish the job with vinegar.

Nice one z1913!

I've always thought the floral knife was appealing. One day I will give it a whirl,,

Lots of good posts again.

That floral knife is great, I've never had one or even seen one in person.

Radios, farm toys, growing herbs......lots of hobbies outside the SAK world, but all require a SAK at times.

Day 10 Huntsman challenge

Working on some more leather projects. Today I used the scissors, small blade and awl. Working on some accoutrements for my flintlock squirrel rifle. Yup more hobbies.

The phone on the kitchen is working, no need for a new cable. Wife is satisfied (for now)
I like to eat a variety of small apples (Sorry, I forgot the name). Very easy to find in any market around here in bags with . They are sweet, a little acid and firm. A apple a day keeps the doctor away. ( No pies, unfortunately)
I have one floral knife, the Day Packer blade. It's the second in my preference as "apple slicer". The first is the Opinel n. 06.
The floral is a great knife. Simple, elegant, very funcional, and cut like a charm.

Day 10 - Minimal SAK Challenge

Today, the Compact scissors was used to remove a tag from my little girl pijama.

Ahhhh.
Nothing like a distracted guy like me writing...
The variety of apples is named "gala". I found It in bags with 20 little, juicy, small apples.

It's been a funny challenge for me. I'm using a SAK that have a set of tools that I really enjoy to use.
I like very much the Compact and It cousin "The Trail Guide" that is a Compact plus a metal file.
Maybe I'll change It for a Cadet or a Spartan. A SAK without scissors and a full opener layer on will be a kind of prepararion for the Soldier On Challenge who will start next month.

Compact has a great toolset! I do not have one, but defintely would consider one.

My only issue is the 91mm size - I like to keep the knife in the 5th pocket (readily available but unobtrusive) and the 91, two layer is too large for that.
So my usual carry is Rambler on key ring and 84mm Waiter or Alox Bantam in the coin pocket. Rambler has probably all the tools needed (except corkscrew) but it is nice to have the larger blade as well and as mentioned above readily available without need to remove the tool from keys.

You have a flintlock that is primarily used for squirrels?

Day 11

No use for today, so the main Challengers are posing with some coffee.

Today the small blade sharpened a few pencils and cut open a goat mineral block. Also used the awl on a couple of leather straps.

Ok, to expound a little.

Yessir, I call it a squirrel rifle. It's probably more appropriate to call it a small game rifle. Maybe squirrel to coyote. .36 caliber flintlock rifle, 44" swamped barrel.
I also use a .62 caliber smoothbore flintlock for grouse, woodcock, rabbits, squirrel and turkey using shot. I've also bagged a few deer with it  using a .60 roundball.
I won't even get into the big game rifles. Let's just say that flintlocks are just as addictive as SAKs.

If you ever get up North and want to try a few out, let me know.

Day 12 - Minimal SAK

No action today.

My Waiter is slightly enhanced with additional capabilities - I added a pen to the scales and modifed the micro SD in the corscrew - now it is 0 Ph instead of the previous micro flat.

And for all 1 layer SAKs I prefer to change the keyring for the smaller one from 58mm - it is minor thing but results in significant change in look and feel - the smaller ring is much more appropriate in my eyes.

Smaller key ring, I'll have to try that sometime. The pen and small driver definitely make it into a more versatile tool.  :like:

Just an FYI, I will be bowing out of this challenge due to health issues. I hadn't mentioned it before, but last week I tested positive for Covid. It's such a polarizing subject that I just opted to keep it to myself. Evidently days 5-7 are important as you either really get better of you crash,,,, I took a turn for the worse yesterday ( day 7 ). This morning I had a video consult and was advised to get to urgent care,,, scary stuff lemme tell ya. The verdict is that I have Covid related pneumonia in one lung. They put me on an IV for a while, pumped me up with meds and now I am home. I should be fine now, but just don't have the energy to keep up with a challenge right now. Good luck to everyone!!

I'm sorry to hear that. May you make a fast and full recovery.

I likely won't do much travel outside of my area until at least mid-spring...but I might just take you up on that.

More great photos from awl. I'm really liking the Waiter with enhanced capability.

Minimal SAK Challenge Day 12

A day of little action, as dirty work was on the agenda. The Bantam opened a box containing "privacy hooks," and the BTCSD (see here for how it got that unusual nickname) trimmed some errant hairs. I wasn't able to get photos of the former, and I doubt y'awl want to see photos of the latter...so the BTCSD posed with a .41 caliber pistol round instead.

Day 12 Huntsman challenge

Finally a day above 10°f . I spent most of the day clearing snowdrifts. I used the large driver to tighten a clamp. Other than cutting up an apple that was it for today's uses.

Day 13 Huntsman challenge

Today I used the awl to clean out cooling vents on chainsaw. It worked ok, but not nearly as well as the universal scaler! Also opened some packages.

Lemonier, thanks for the update. Hope to see some of your posts on here when you get time.
