Do you remove the keyring on your SAK?
on: January 12, 2022, 07:00:39 PM
I am curious about this topic.
I actually like keyrings because I like to add lanyards to my SAKs.
I have these two custom knives that I do like, I just wish they had keyrings.

I used to remove them all. At least the ring and usually the lug when I mod it. Not gonna do that for 111mm anymore as I found the lug doesn’t bother me like they do on 91mm (93mm too, I guess) and smaller frames. And that I might want to use lanyards or a dingle-dangler on one when camping.

I'm with you on the keyring thing  :tu:

I wish my Bantams had keyrings as they get lost in my pocket when being carried (mostly evening wear)

TBH I wish Vic' would bring back the bail  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

On some yes like my edc 91mm or 93mm.
Don't usually remove them from 58mm or 91mm with a corkscrew.

I have these two custom knives that I do like, I just wish they had keyrings.

Why don't you have them reworked to include a keyring?

Oh, the bail...love those!  :dd:

You're right I should have them reworked.  I bought them after they had been made and offered for sale, otherwise I definitely would have made sure they had it.

That's one of those things that can only be answered by...

"It all depends".

Like any other knife some simply say, yes, I need a lanyard, while others say no.

That quite ambiguous answer leads me to the other answer that simply states that I've only removed the lug off of 1 SAK.
If I don't need a lanyard on one I just remove the split ring.

I have a few SAK that came without and I quite like them.  I have not removed any from SAK with them.  I also like to add a lanyard so its a win when they come with them.

THIS!

Put the keyring back on the bantam, and bring back the Wenger SI type bail on the pioneer series. Or at least the hollow rivet!!!!
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

Dang. Forgot about the 58mm. I keep those too.

+1 on getting those re-worked. No reason to own a mod that isn’t the way you want it.  :dunno:

I had to go with "other." Why? I've never removed the key ring from any of my SAKs. Those that are intended for preservation remain in their factory configuration. I like to add lanyards to my carriers as well, so it makes sense to keep the key ring on them.

However, given the right circumstance, I may remove a key ring and its attachment point. That circumstance hasn't reared its head yet, but it may if given enough time.

It depends. Back when I only bought two-layer models (because I could afford them), I always removed the keyring and ground off the attachment nub to give my thumb a comfortable place to rest when using the small blade.

I stopped removing the keyring once I started using lanyards and/or pocket clips to carry my SAKs. Also, I mainly carry 3+ layer SAKs now, and the width of these models moves the keyring out of the way of my thumb.
Current SAKs: Explorer, SwissChamp, Handyman (modded), Climber, Super Tinker, Tinker, Woodsman (modded), Electrician, Pioneer, SwissTool, Executive, Ambassador, Champion Plus
Current Leatherman tools: PST, Original Wave, Wave, Wave+, Blast, Bond, Curl, Style PS, Micra

Nope. It's necessary for lanyards and pocket hanger clips, and I've never found it to get in my way.
The only time I can see lug removal being of any real use is if you regularly pinch your skin between it and the screwdriver/cap lifter.

The short answer is “It depends”.

The only SAKs I really use the key ring on are 58mm.

The only SAKSs on which the key ring really bothers me are 93mm.  I agree that it would be great to see Vic ditch the current 93mm key ring attachment in favor of a hollow rivet and bail, which would provide an attachment for those who want it and would be easy to remove for those who don’t.

Except for 58mm few of my most used knives have even a keyring nub. They’ve either come without it (common for certain models historically) or I’ve ground it off.

I hate how they dig into my palm; & much as I like the idea, I find lanyards get in the way. The 93mm nub is the devil’s work!

I have an Wenger SI with a bail. I don’t like it either but at least you can remove it. I can take or leave the bail on old 91mm knives; I’d never remove it, though.

I like the key rings for lanyards or danglers to keep the knives handy, vertical, and off the bottom of my pocket with the weight on my belt loop where it belongs.  I absolutely hate a knife lying in the bottom of my pocket as they invariably create an uncomfortable pressure point against my thigh.

FWIW, the Vic hollow rivets are stainless and I doubt they’ll ever come back. The bail attachment is cool, and the nickel silver is easy enough to put a 2mm hole on each side to accept one.

I removed the keyring on my one handed Sentinel, but I’ve never removed them from any other SAKs.  I prefer no keyring like in my Tourist.

I leave the keyring on the knives in case I want a lanyard or quick link to put a lanyard on.
