Yep :D price is always my biggest deterrent ;) If money wasn't an object I would have a very large collection :ahhh

It may not be very large, but it is quite enviable

Like you, price is my biggest deterrent. Otherwise, I would have a PT-540 and a Cable Dawg in my electrician's MT collection. I have just bought a Radioshack E4 because I finally found one that was priced at about 1/3rd the typical amount and appears to only need some cleaning.

I remember Leatherman claiming they do not create modified tools, then along came Dave Canterbury and he got a Wave modified by Leatherman... so maybe this could be an example of a prototype experiment that the masses may had wanted, and Leatherman could of sold the design off in limited numbers?
Only drawback I can see on this is a warranty issue...

Did not like the whole magnet stuff on the Free series. Never had one to test or try out. Would of probably bought one of their non-pliers series if one of them had the Leatherman push-type of can opener. The hack with a bottle opener, push can openers FTW. :D  Is one of the reasons I carry a Swiss Knife or Tool is because stuff works, and of the can opener.

Just remember that Leatherman engineers looked down on everyone on this web site during a reddit live event.
A little Leatherman information.

I do remember that :salute: and even signed up on Reddit just to comment to them but I think my comment was a bit late for them to see

Unless what they come out with is revolutionary or something out of the norm,  not just upgraded materials and extra colors on existing models then I will probably pass because they won't be cheap :-\

Who knows I may end up eating my words and hopefully so but I have high doubts about this

I signed up in hope of customized tool sets, not just a new color.  I don't like the FOMO motivation, "launch days", and I probably won't like the price.  If it works out, it works out.  If not, I've lost nothing.

It may have to do with how people went crazy over the NASA  Charge :dunno:

I won't ever be able to afford any of them probably but I did get an email and signed up for updates  :D

Well just like those heritage pst they brought out for however much. They showed they could move those, so there is some money out there.

Speaking of the Tom Sachs charge, aVE on YouTube got one and used it when he was putting chains on his tractor rashed up the pliers and bent the file, and the scribe was broken when he first opened it. He thought the bead on the lanyard was plastic and scratched it on something metal and was amazed it was ceramic. And I'm sitting there saying omg what is he going to break next :o

That one won't end up on a shelf

I had to look that guy up and watch the video.  That was a little painful to watch.

As an aside, every time I see a broken Leatherman on Reddit, I almost always suspect it was caused by similar abuse.

he's a canoodlian too, had to make a run for it last time the fires were bad up there. He said in the video he was given the TS charge by someone. He also said he had bought a bunch cause because he either gives them away or loses them. So maybe you should make friends... Maybe you can talk him out of it  :pok:

if you are going to send it in for warranty might as well make it worth while, no?

One that springs to mind is JerryRigEverything, an engineer and reviewer who seems to actually provide useful and structured feedback as to the durability of the product, mainly phones and tablets in his case. He also details some repairs, as well as other videos where he just builds really cool stuff.

I don't think so.  Abusing a warranty is almost like stealing.

I agree. Intentional abuse and then claiming a warranty is definitely wrong. But this younger generation have very few scruples and seem to think they are entitled to it. Is what is probably killing a lot of warranties, and higher costs of tools. Then there are some people that really should not own a multitool...

Wait till their generation takes over, Chaos will ensue! :ahhh   What was that one movie called again?  Idiocracy:rofl:

On that, have heard of people breaking their Surge to get Surge 2.0 ... and what totally amazing me, what in tarnation did they do to break that bugger?!? Surge is bomb proof! Only issue I've had with it is v1.0's exchanger not staying closed. The dimple is not enough. Cannot justify buying Surge 2.0 cause they are far too heavy to carry. It sits in its cubby hole most of the time.

Did break my first Crunch, and I tell you, when I heard the metal cave in so did my heart. My father taught me to respect my tools and they would last a lifetime! That first Crunch and I had a lot of memories together, then the jaws collapsed under pressure.

Surge is indestructible from what I can see. Wished I had a Charge-sized version of that beasty!  :viking:

I cringed when he scraped the bead against the vise, and when he was testing the locks! :dwts:

I don't mind if it's expensive from Leatherman.  Worse case, I'll just not buy one.  I'll be pissed off if my only chance to buy one is from a reseller at a huge markup.

Made up from rejects, factory seconds, broken junk, random stuff used in place of the correct parts, and a bunch of empty takeaway food boxes, painted in a fancy colour and with some USP like a piece of Mammoth Bone glued to the side, in order to try and justify charging twenty times the price of the normal version.... kinda like half the smurf that Heinnie Haynes sell, really.
Of course, if any of the designs prove to work, a cheaper version with similar markup will be mass-produced, because guinnea-pigging is what the Garage is all about.

Let's not assume they're needlessly high priced.  Leatherman engineers have bills to pay...Subaru payments, vegan dog food, tips for the barista.

I assume that Leatherman Garage will carry a modified warranty. They may not have replacement components because part of the reason is to use limited quantity and special materials. You will probably get a repair if it's possible and a regular component, and otherwise you will probably get a different tool, like if you warranty a SideClip or Juice today. Also, they may just carry a significantly shorter warranty period because they are without limits and experimental.
