Spirit MX Clip
on: January 20, 2022, 11:00:51 PM
Just got it today, love it. It will replaced the Spirit X I carried in the past six years.

You might noticed the clip is installed at the wrong handle for OHO From the box, that can be correct later.

The clip ($20 if buy separately) is very robust with good retention, attached to the tool at the corkscrew attachment slot via a 3mm hex screw. It doesn't get in the way when the tool is being used, good engineering solution to the age old problem.

The blade is repositioned on the MX model for one handed opening, here is a picture of it next to Spirit X.
The thumb tap works very well, i only wish it is better looking.

And this time, the Spirit Mx has perfectly lined up handles, see it next the Spirit X.
The nail nick on the blade is gone, of course.

Since the clip is removeable, here is how it looks installed on Spirit X.

Congratulations on your newest acquisition, and thank you for your initial review (as I expect for an in depth report later :D!), Kampfer; it looks every bit as good as I imagine it, and even better knowing that the alignment is now spot on (and this is a conjecture on my part, as I've only read/seen about the problem because both my XC's came aligned). :tu: :like:

So, I guess I can give a green light to my conscience and finally hit the checkout/pay button for the clip then. :woohoo:

as I expect for an in depth report later :D!

It might not be necessary, it has TWO new simple features over the tried and true Spirit line, and both features WORK.

My only complain is the price, this thing costed me $175 shipped and doesn't come with a sheath.
Nothing is cheap anymore i guess.  :dunno: LGB.

The clip also forms a lanyard hole for those need one.

Victorinox been marketing the corkscrew attachment slot as Lanyard hole, which I strongly disagree.

So the screw attaches from inside-to-outer of the handle then?

In the photos one has a red background, other had none. Am guessing Kampfer is really good an coloring the background area to make it stand out more?  :D

But TWO that can be gamechangers:
- ease of carry
- weight feel
- comfort: in pocket; in hand; during use
- ease of opening/closing
- do the nubs affect cutting performance (like,
when slicing/cutting an apple, does it  "gets
  caught")?
- do the nubs get caught in pocket, pocket seams?
- tightness of clip
- ...

Have you considered making a tutorial on how to do this? :D I always make a mess when trying. :ahhh

This looks great and thanks for the review.

I think I’m going to need to get at least a clip, although it may be an excuse for a new Spirit.

Can you confirm if the clip from the Vic belt hanger can be attached to the pocket clip in the same fashion as the lanyard? This would be perfect for hanging carry.

I don't have that belt hanger so I can not be sure, but I can tell you I could insert 550 cord through, so I don't see it being an issue.

I have the hanger, but im not sure how it would be implemented or why.

Also imo I think the clip placement is slightly better as it is originally positioned, the clip tail digs in/hotspots when on the main blade side.

Not to highjack, but more as a complement to Kampfer's post...

My clip has just arrived, and I like it a lot!!! :mail: :woohoo:
Exquisitely crafted and polished stainless steel, it fits all 2001 to current Spirit models by a snug fitting nub that goes into one of the corkscrew's half-round attachment hole; no wobblyness, no lifting, no askewed mounting. At the moment, I do not feel hot spots or uncomfortableness while gripping with pliers, using the knife or the saw. It holds strong enough as not let the tool fall (at least not from my jeans...) but not as much as to make clipping or retrieval difficult or cumbersome. :2tu:

The Spirit can still be carried and retrieved from the regular or Plus sheaths (I have nylon ones, but I'd guess that it will be the same for leather ones) without having to remove it (the clip). :multi:

Alas, If you were thinking that it could be used also on the Swisstools (like I did), you'll ( and me!) have to get the specific one; the Spirit's corkscrew opening is a mirror-image from the Swisstool one. :bnghd:

One caveat; on my XC, the clip won't allow the handle to close the pliers fully when at rest, having maybe a 1mm gap at the tip. This is just a PSA as it does not affect function, form or aesthetics in any way (in other words, even my OCD isn't affected by it! ), but others...

Will I/can I recommend it? HECK YEEEAAAAAH, AND WHOLEHEARTEDLY!!!!! :2tu:

A bit more ...   [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]    [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I now think that having such a clip on my Spirit, the Waves will have a "run for their money" as an EDC.
Quite frankly, I think Leatherman should worry now since having a price similar to the Spirits and not the quality, fit and finish on par, and now all Swisstools having models that are OHO and also with unique clips to them ( remember the wobblyness of the Wave/Charge clip on the Surge!?),  and them been upgradable to other models of Swisstool and Swisstool Spirit models, I'd guess I won't be the the only one lusting/acquiring Vic's offerings!!!

Spent like 2 hours in True Value to find a suitable replacement screw, which was a 2mm with a 32 thread. It was a tad longer and a pain to install as it was a flathead. :ahhh Got it in there and used Loctite to secure it. Was able to tighten it up rather snug too. The Victorinox supplied screw had mashed threads. -- Cut the bolt and have to file the end down some.

Holds in good now, and wow, that Spirit really holds in tight in its sheath. Much harder to remove. :D

Sent Victorinox an email about their screw, and added a photo. Did ask for a replacement. Will see what happens. If not, I can live with it. The pliers do not fold in as snugly as the screw bolt I used needed a washer to hold its end in. I think the bolt head sticks out a tad too high. C'est la vie.

This was the solution to my main problem and this is why I got the Leatherman P2 fiasco, the pocket clip!
Whit this solution I can go back to my 100% reliable Spirit!
Thank you.
