Alox 58MM Screws vs. Brass Rods?
on: February 07, 2022, 04:40:34 PM
First off, please forgive me if this question has been answered else were, I can't seem to find it if it is.

I would like to have screws in my 58MM Alox Mod vs. the brass rods.  My problem is I am not sure what would be the best size screw.  I can easily find 1.6mm screws but the holes for the rods are 1.5mm.  Drilling them out is not going to be hard so that is not a problem. Even going to 2MM screws I guess could be an option.

Also, I would need either a nut or tap the back scale to accept the threads.  I would prefer a smooth surface so taping the scale would make sense.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Drilling the tools and springs need a carbide drill bit. In this size it may break esily and it's expensive.
Tap the back scale seems a good option.

Michael thanks for the tip.  I have the ability to drill out the tools, just wanted to make sure as I don't want to waste the Alox scales.  I am also looking at the feasibility of making an M1.5 tube with Stainless Steel and then tapping an M1 thread.  I need to see if I can get access to a smaller Lathe for that.

It's a good idea.

With classic screws, it would be difficult to find some with partial thread to avoid wear.

I am looking at turning down a larger screw to get rid of the threads and then thread the end to the right size and Bob's your uncle.

I do something similar. And you don’t need a lathe. I don’t use one, at least.

I would not try to tap the 58mm alox scales to accept threaded rod. I sincerely doubt that would work for anything intended to be permanent. If I were gonna go with a threaded rivet or bolt/screw from the other side and full length, I’d consider a custom nut to do the job.
