111 mm Outrider Awl and Hook
on: February 15, 2022, 10:37:14 PM
Hi All,

I recently decided to convert an Outrider to OHO.  I have a OHO NS trekker coming but I have received the Outrider.   I have two questions as of right now.  Does anyone know what back spring or what I would have to do to the a back spring to get a hook on the back side tools?  Also that awl is hell on earth trying to get open, is there a way to get it to open up without having to resort to the mini-screw driver from the corkscrew or destroying a finger nail each time; perhaps filing it down somewhere when I take it apart?

Thanks in advance.

The blade backspring of some two-layer knives (eg Picnicker) can take a back side tool, so you could try to put a hook there. The width should be OK but since the hook has a different tang compared to the awl or the corkscrew it might need some reworking.
The awl shouldn't be that hard to open. You could try to lubricate it or use the opener layer from your trekker, which might be easier to open. If all else fails, filing a little to round the right angle at the bottom may help (don't overdo it or it will become too loose, slow and with regular tests is the way to go).

Lots of ways to get both of these mods done.

Almost any 111mm backspring that uses a back side tool can be made to work. The only one I wouldn’t try is a liner lock opener one. But I’m pretty sure even that one could be made to work.

I’d do the awl mod elsewhere. Backspring or the awl’s pivot hole. Depends if you mind altering the spring pressure on the top side tools.

IIIRC, there’s an example of one in the mod forum. I don’t think I liked the way it was done, but might give you some ideas.

…It was the added nail nick I didn’t care for. Too ‘not factory looking’ for me.  :P
