This could be a lot of fun (plus an excuse to purge a few canned goods). Put me down as a maybe.

Also, as a thought, how does claiming the GSMRE badge in parallel with another challenge work? With it not being a "traditional" challenge badge, could we claim it whilst still going through the Soldier On! badge? I don't want to be brought up in front of High Command for misdemeanours in the field. Again. :ahhh

Heheheh.....should not a be a problem. This is not a 30-day challenge and not a knife challenge, so you should have no problem claiming both badges.   :tu:

The rules encourage you to provide beverages and things to improve morale  :pok:

I'm not sure 6 pints of Joey Holt's finest bitter in the pub afterwards truly counts towards the spirit of packing all the beverages up yourself...

Excellent, with that in mind, it looks like I've been press ganged encouraged into this, so I'll have to try and think of a plan. :tu:

I went for a stroll today...and ended up in the shops.......

• Freeze Dried Pad Thai
• Orange drink mix
• Canned Mussels (in Sofrito, no less)
• Nut bar...or something.
• Charms candy
• Matches (for the accessory packet, gotta have an accessory packet)

For me, the Charms candy are a MUST. Charms candy were part of WW II rations and emergency rations for US aviators and soldiers. Truth be told, I prefer Life Savers™, but the Charms have a nostalgic value that can't be replaced!  :D

Lessons learned?   Maybe this is a chance to redesign your GSMRE?  Maybe add a packet of Rolaids tablets to your accessory pack?

My GSMRE would definitely need to be redesigned.

Heartburn or not, I think I will give it another go.

Now, if only I can find Pad Thai and a tin of mussels in sofrito... Both would be upgrades over what was in my GSMRE last time.

I'm one of the few people in the armed forces ever to have genuinely liked the issued RatPacks, so the idea of this one really appeals to me.
However, I don't feel it's very much of a challenge, given that the last ratpacks I was issued were simply compiled from off-the-shelf civvy products... with the only possible exception being the Yorkie bar that read "Not for Civvies". Also, with the very free and open stipulation that we can use "shops, stores, gas stations, or online", that means I could go pretty much anywhere and get everything to make the aforementioned ratpacks.

So unless I've missed something, where's the actual challenge?

Tasky, I'm with you in that I actually loved our MRE's.  Building your own is even better!

I kinda enjoyed MRE's, too. But...I've never had to live on them for more than a couple days. Lucky me.  ;)

The challenge is to come up with your own version. Or to duplicate some other country's version as near as you can. If you want to create more of a challenge for yourself, and I'd admire this... :pok:..., give yourself one hour in one service station (Gas Station, here) to build your GSMRE. Remember, everything must be shelf-stable and stored for a week.

Or, build your "Dream MRE": pick the best of the best, be that Yorkie Bar or tinned mussels.  :tu:

A big part of my motivation in doing these challenges is to come up with ideas for camping or backpacking food. And I enjoy the camaraderie of everyone building his or her GSMRE, sharing what they enjoyed, didn't enjoy, and how bad their heartburn was.  ;)

I see it more as a bit of fun with likeminded folks than a challenge :tu:
But that is how I see any challenge here :dunno:
