Canary Islands knife
on: March 29, 2022, 02:42:48 PM
Blade:
Forged in carbon steel, made by Antonio García Déniz (Gáldar - Gran Canaria), as shown by the marks on the "colchón" (this is what the file marks at the beginning of the spine are called in the Canary Islands) and which indicate the signature of the craftsman who made the blade.

Handle:
Formed by alternating black horn and blond horn. Decorated with aluminium inlays. The bolster and butt are made in brass. Probably the craftsman is Aquilino Auyanet Pérez from Gáldar (Gran Canaria).

It is very common that two craftsmen participate in the making of the Canarian knife. The blacksmith forges the blade (stamping his mark on the handle) and the craftsman who designs and makes the handle. Although both artisans can also be the same person.

The Canarian knife, wrongly called 'naife', is a traditional instrument used by farmers and ranchers in Gran Canaria. It is a specialized tool for bananas, the thin and wide blade facilitates a straight cut.

This design in the photograph is called 'cabo de hueso' (Bone handle) or 'cabo de costa' (Coast handle).

Total: 290 mm.
Blade: 174 mm x 2.5 mm
Weight: 91 grs.

Try not to be the person who blunders around and causes everyone else to get out the way.  Everyone else thinks you're a utter...

Nice!

The blade reminds me of Spanish knives and the Handle of French ones

Gorgeous knife!

I know it would be very difficult to happen, but I'd awlways be "OMG, it's going to break at the middle! That's so thin!"
