Day 01
Using the Ka-Bar 3189
Removing the childproof outer cap from a new pill bottle must mean we've started a new month.  Good start so far.
Please remember to number your daily post as I have above, and list the make and model of the folding hunter you're using as I have above.  It makes it easier for the moderators to keep track of who actually completes 30 days and the rest of us don't have to keep going back through the thread to find what that knife is.

Day 1

Schrade 70T

This USA-made Schrade 70T is showing its age a bit, but fit and finish were originally excellent.  It’s a very close copy of the 110, though it manages to be even heavier.  The saw cut delrin scales hit the sweet spot of providing some extra grip without being abrasive.

It made short work of opening this package today, in spite of a somewhat overzealous taping job by the sender.

What was in the package, you ask?  Perhaps that will be revealed later in this challenge, so stay tuned!

I'm that guy,,,

When I was active on ebay I would put great emphasis on taping a box. The USPS can be a sellers worst enemy and a half roll of box tape is cheap insurance.

:iagree: when I seal a package I want to know that the only way it is going to be opened is intentionally, by the person who I meant to open it.

I think it looks damn good! :tu: The 7OT did not show up in my go-to listing of Old Timers, so I'll have to do some research into its production dates.

And I use a lot of tape when preparing a package for shipment. That's due in part to the large amount of packing material I cram in a box...

The 7OT is basically Schrade's Old Timer version of the Uncle Henry LB7, with sawcut delrin instead of wood scales. Most of them are stainless, but a few were carbon steel. When I bought this one, I deliberately sought the carbon version.

Day 02
The Ka-Bar 3189 weighs less than my Schrade or my Buck 110 and has both a pocket clip and a lanyard hole.  Unfortunately, for me the pocket clip is on the wrong side and the wrong end as I prefer tip up carry and I'd rather the clip be under my fingers when holding the knife than in my palm.  If I had the right size driver bit (which I do not) I could change which side the pocket clip is on, but I can not change which end it's on. This knife will pocket carry but it will always be a little awkward to deploy, but only because of my preferences.

DAY 02

Browning Pursuit

Very nice for food prep/disposal. The concave blade makes it a great slicer. It feels half the weight of the 110, but cuts just as good.

I think this one deserved a before/after group.

Day 2

Case 65 pattern Folding Hunter

Yesterday’s package contained this Case Folding Hunter in orange synthetic.

As per the rules of this challenge, it is the single blade version.  For those only familiar with the more common two blade version, the single blade version is considerably slimmer, lighter, and more pocketable than the two blade version.  Also, without the second blade in the way, the single blade model is easy to pinch open.  Finally, unlike the two blade model, the single blade model does not come with a sheath.

I’m not wild about the half-serrated blade at this point.  For most of my use (which is probably more cigars and fingernails than anything else haha) a PE blade (and especially a PE edge just past the tang) seems to work out better.  I did manage to trim this little cigar by choking up on the blade and using the PE portion of the blade, but it’s not ideal.  It also seems like serrations wouldn’t be desirable for the stated purpose of a folding hunting knife.  But, if one if one is going to have a partially serrated blade, having one this large does allow for both PE and SE sections to be large enough to be used somewhat independently for most cutting tasks.  Before this challenge is done, I’ll try the SE section on some rope or something and see how it does.

Thanks!

This one was purchased new by me at a Walmart in 2004, so I’m pretty sure they were in production then, but beyond that I can’t shed any more light on production dates.

I believe it did come with a sheath as well.  Though I did carry and use this knife some, I never used the sheath, and must confess I’m unsure of the whereabouts of the sheath at this point.

Nate that is a big knife with big serrations.  I agree that the serrations do seem out of place on a hunting knife.  I hope they don't get in your way too much and that you can work with them.  I hope they can at least cut rope.

Nice use!

You don't see too many of the full-size Blackhorns. Case must not have made them long, only in the early years of the Caliber line. I didn't even know Case made a full-size one until years later wondering "If we have a 'mini' Blackhorn, where's the big one?"

Thanks! The knife is growing on me fast. I was unaware of a full sized one before I stumbled across this one on Saturday,, though I've had a couple of the minis. I nabbed a copy of an ad off the inner-webs. Mine is the 3.5" blade version. The "Click-n-clean" would be pretty handy for cleaning up after field dressing a critter.

Day 3

A.G. Russell Folding Hunter

Today, I carried this massive A.G. Russell Folding Hunter in yellow delrin.  It had no trouble trimming this 6” cigar.

In spite of its size, it did not come with a sheath.  However, it rode around quite comfortably in my right front pocket next to my wallet, sitting vertically with only part of the lanyard sticking up out of the pocket.  (I’m not usually a fan of lanyards on my knives, but this knife came with a lanyard and it’s actually pretty handy.)

Fit and finish are excellent.  While not as traditional as brass or nickel silver, the stainless steel liners and bolsters look nice and have to be more durable.

My favorite feature of this knife, by far, is what looks like a simple long pull, but is really so much more.  While it is visually very subtle, the way the pull is cut and the blade ground creates a slightly raised lip between the pull and the spine.  Given the smoothness of the action, it is easy to catch this lip with the thumb and open the blade.  So this bad boy is OHO, but retains a clean traditional look, without any of the studs, holes, discs, flippers, or buttons that generally appear on OHO knives.
