Day 30. Wild Night cutting the plastic wrap from some sparkling water bottles.

Just out of interest Barry is there going to be a Badge for this challenge?

I believe one is in the works.  I spoke to a Mod about getting one done for our challenge and there didn't seem to be any problem.

Day 30

Look at this!

More SAKs!

The Climber is used but pretty modern based on tang stamps, etc. The Spartan and wallet is a time capsule. It’s new but it’s a 90s Spartan an the packaging is yellowed enough to be about that age too.

Also, I used the main blade to cut the tags off some new clothes for the kids.

I went out for a hike today and took a pic of the Sapphire Spartan in our natural habitat: palmetto and Spanish moss.
:like: The blue and red look great together!

More SAKs!
:like: Hope this challenge wasn't too hard on your bank account! :D

Day 30

Though I'll not be requesting a badge (I ran two challenges concurrently), I sure did enjoy this one. It was a great opportunity to give some pocket time to a model I'd not extensively carried. Most all of my typical needs can be ably handled by the humble but mighty Spartan. I would participate in a Spartan challenge again in a heartbeat...ideally when I could do 30 Spartans in 30 days.

For the final challenge photos, we'll check out a lime green Spartan (which I believe may have been originally packaged with a kitchen knife) and observe a changing of the guard.

Thanks to awl who participated for making this a great challenge, and to Mr. Barry Rowland for hosting it! :salute:

Is today the last day (as in 30 days)? Or is tomorrow the last day since it’s the 31st?

Challenges typically last 30 days. Unless Barry says otherwise, today is the last official day...but feel free to add a bonus for tomorrow!

Day 30
i've found the Spartan yo be a capable EDC tool even though i prefer to have a scissors as well.
it was interesting carrying and using this pioneer model, although uses weren't as prolific as i would have liked.
i had planned on buying another Spartan for this challenge but remembered too late so went with the camo.
these are cool scales, but i feel a SAK has to have red scales,i need more SAKs with different scales to work through this problem  :D

DAY 31 Evaluation:

A three layer knife is my bare minimum, but a four layer is my practical minimum.   That made the Spartan challenge both spartan and challenging.  I used every tool and only found the small screwdriver on the  can opener to be wanting.  I wished for scissors many times, but used the blade and cut stuff like a true Spartan.   Using a clip, I carried it in a pocket, which is something I never do with SAKs having more layers.

Could I get by with just two layers?  Clearly, yes.  Will I give that a go  now that the challenge is over?  Of course not.  I want more tools  :climber:

Thanks to Barry, and congrats to all Spartans who participated!  It's always great fun to see your pics and read your stories!  :tu: :salute:

Certainly, I realized that the challenge officially ended yesterday and I had intended to pocket my stockman when it was over....😎
So look what happened this morning when I got dressed.   🙄

I grabbed up my Spartan without even thinking about it.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks, Barry.
It's been a fun month.

And a big thank you Barry for kicking this off. I have been out to a militaria show to meet an old friend today so I've only picked up a Spartan when I got home but here's todays bonus. I do like Walnut scales though, to be fair, I like T&T more. So here's something to zing up some sparkling water to celebrate a fine challenge in good company awl

Challenge Summary

First I want to thank Barry for organizing the challenge. It was a lot of fun! I also want to thank the Swiss Army Knights community for welcoming me. I’ve learned a lot from the the forum and the people here.

This challenge was interesting to me for one main reason- I had kind of already done it! All of 2021 saw me carrying a Tourist paired with a Classic SD (later a Rambler). So I thought I knew what I was getting into. I was already comfortable with the toolset.

Or so I thought.

What I realized during this challenge was just how much I relied on the Classic/Rambler to help me out when a Spartan/Tourist just doesn’t have the right tool for the job (scissors, small screwdriver, etc.).

That said, even without my Rambler I did just fine with the Spartan this month. With one exception I was able to use one of the blades to substitute for scissors when I needed them. Scissors would have been easier some of those times, but it worked out. There were other times when I needed a dedicated tool, like pliers, that a Spartan could not supply. But most things I needed to do this month were easily within the Spartan’s capabilities.

Overall, it’s easy to see why the Spartan toolset is the classic, stereotypical SAK. It has what you need and no extras. There are some useful tools that are missing and it’s easy to see why something like the Huntsman is so popular, but the essentials are all there on a Spartan.

What’s next for me? I want to spend some time carrying some of my newly acquired SAKs to see how often I will actually use tools like the wood saw and pliers. Find out how essential they are to me and my daily needs. Scissors are a must for me - as the father of young children sometimes scissors are just safer. The Camper, Deluxe Tinker, and Evolution S557 all need some pocket time and experimentation.

But I’m sure a Spartan or Tourist will be just the ticket sometimes. I tend toward minimalism in a lot of things, so I’m currently trying to figure out what my “minimum viable SAK” is going to be.

Edit - I also need to give my old Explorer some pocket time too. It never got much; it was a backpack/drawer SAK. But I’m curious to see if the inline Phillips is redundant since the can opener can handle a lot of screws…

Except me. I've alwready requested the 30-day traditional badge, and I don't expect the rules to be bent. But I sure did enjoy this challenge, and I will partake again!

Go back through and check Marlowe.  Usually the requirement is to post a pic daily.

Retroactive pics count? I can't even edit the Day 10 post any more. I guess there's some time limit on that in the forum software, which makes sense.

Then just add a couple of Spartan Days on at the end now if you can make it.  The world of Spartans is pretty relaxed, let’s face it there’s been some  84mm posted so no one will begrudge you the extra and to be honest I think we’ve all shown what a great carry it is. Heck I may as well dig one out again tomorrow in solidarity

That I can do... I'm already doing it! The Spartan is still in my pocket. I wanted to take the NOS Spartan from 90s that I got with the nylon wallet for a spin.
