Mora blank blade meets some wood
on: April 03, 2022, 08:27:31 PM
Learning to make solid wood knife handles (with a rat tail tang) has been on my to do list for a long time.
So I got a cheap blank blade, a long drill and got started.

Was a good practice, I learned a lot and I'm pretty happy with the result (for a first try)

That looks awesome!

I have been itching to handle a Helle blank. The blanks are a tiny fraction of their finished knives (to the point knife, handle materials, and materials for a sheath or even a cheap generic sheath would work to about half the finished knife), and my problem has been dealing with the stick tang, as opposed to a flat/full tang with holes to pin the scales to. I'll be using this post as a guide, and start with a much cheaper Mora blank.

Thank you all for your praise!  :salute:

@cody: The same with me. I want to build myself a nice puukko with a good forged blade. Because I had zero experience with stick tang before, I made this knife as a practice. Can only recommend it to you, it's easier than I thought. My only problem was that I don't have a stand drill, so it wasn't possible for me to drill two perfectly parallel holes for the tang. So I just drilled a single hole and filed it out. Next time I'll buy a good needle file for that, the cheap scrap files on the photo are no fun to work with.

It looks like you did a great job with the tools you had! I've hafted a couple of Mora blade blanks (I cut pieces off of a wooden sledgehammer handle for the handle blanks) and I always have trouble shaping the hole to fit the tapered section of tang at the base of the blade. I also need to get a longer drill bit like that one.

Very nice gents!

Here's the only one I ever tried to do myself.  Many years ago now so I can't even tell you who made the "AK" stamped blade. IIRC blade and brass bits came in from a Finnish website.

Thank you guys.
@hsherzfeld and Gareth: Looks good! Thanks for showing here.  :salute:

I recently made another one. My first time with bronze. The stuff is harder than I thought.

That's another great looking knife Sneider.  :hatsoff:

I've never worked with bronze but given they used to make swords, axes and cannons out of the stuff I'm guessing it has it's strengths.  :D

Thank you guys.

@Gareth: Well, right. I just read that bronze should be processed with separate files etc. My old iron file was probably not the ideal tool for this.
