DAY 16

A warm one today. A hot dog with some kraut sounded easy and wouldn't heat up the joint. This Huntsman opened that can and did a good job. Used that main blade for my cheese cubes for work. And when I noticed how dirty it looked in the picture I wash it up. Used that reamer/awl to get the dish soap flowing again.

When one needs it, it's there.

DAY 16
The battery cover on this remote control was stuck so used one of my favorite tools on the Explorer- the can opener. It’s plethora of uses makes it the perfect MacGyver tool.

I've always said the can opener was the Swiss Army Knife's Swiss Army Knife.

Day 23

Scissors opened a pack of light bulbs for a lava lamp. Groovy! I wanted to get a picture of it in action, but it's taking its sweet time warming up tonight.

The Fisherman cut some tags off a new shoe travel bag and cut open a popsicle.  But one of the best tasks was opening a box from the pet store.

I wasn’t going to open it immediately, but Fisher started tapping the box to get me to open it. He did get one of the treats right after I opened it.

DAY 17

I have found the Huntsman to be a trusty companion so far. I will admit I do miss the Explorer Mag at times and will likely go back to it for my four layer of choice.

Today we have clouds and I can hear the Cicadas for the first time since last summer. They always have a way of knowing when the monsoons are coming and are a great indicator.

As these trumpeters of change tend to hang out in the Palo  Verde trees I found one with blossoms still.

Huntsman just hanging out.

Day 16

It was a light duty day today. The FX mostly hung out and made me look good. But the weekend holds great promise. I’ll be camping in the mountains for a couple days. The saw will likely get some use.

Day 17:

Had to get some help from a friend (terävä jäkääripuuko 110) to cut up a bench to make it fit the trash container, the JP is a beast of a knife! Batoned it through the bench with a copper mallet and other than some discoloration from the copper it does not have a single mark on IT and it still cuts like a dream :like:

Used the Explorer to cut and peel an apple for the kid after work :tu:

DAY 17  Attempt #2 to get a close up of a caterpillar and a SAK.  It's really sunny, which makes it really tough to see the screen of my phone, so here's the best one for today.  When you first see these guys, they look like very small, dark, worm with a white center.  Within a few days they're this big and chowing down on plants.

When the challenge is over, you might look for an Outdoorsman. Explorer + wood saw and scaler. The Woodsman gets you Explorer + wood saw, but they're much harder to find.

I stuck Plus scales on an Outdoorsman and it's my normal carry at home during yard work season.

Hey SteveP

I had just noticed a thread a day or two ago about the Woodsman. I may look for a champion out in the world and remove some tools and make my own. The prices I see are way out of this poor boys league for an authentic Woodsman.

Hey CM you may want to try keeping your eye out on eBay for a model called the Outdoorsman it was made for Marlboro and it’s almost identical to the Woodsman except it has an added fish scaler. The fish scaler layer is quite useful and thin so it’s relatively the same thickness as the woodsman but don’t quote me on that as I don’t own a Woodsman. However I own an Outdoorsman and it’s awesome. If I recall I got it brand new in the box for less than 40 bucks on the bay.

Check it out on SAK wiki

Day 24

Up early tomorrow for about 10 hours of train rides, so I made a thermos of tea using GA1Dad's trick. Backside tool dangles the bags from the rim for easy retrieval. Then the Huntsman will face it's greatest challenge yet: grad school residency! Packed a Spartan in my luggage to start the next challenge at the end of the week. I'll be in Freeport, so I'm sure they'll be pics of some goodies from Casco Bay Cutlery and the VSAKCS guys.

Smokey the Bear helped me get a car ready to be sold by taking off the old license plates.

After all the hard work in the heat and some storms cooled down the evening, Smokey helped to cut some tinder for the twig stove to make a snack.
