The Dribbly Nib, a 30-day pen challenge
on: May 28, 2022, 07:56:25 PM

It is time to earn your 30-day pen badge!  :tu:

This won’t be just any pen challenge, however. This is a fountain pen challenge. We'll be using live ink and genuine nibs in this one.

There is something special about a fountain pen, the way the ink flows, the way it needs care and filling, the light touch it requires, the unique way the pen lays down the ink. The words just flow. There seems to be an innate elegance in the script they produce....well....until I use one.....

There is no better tool for putting your signature on a document or letter. Certainly there is no cooler way to make your mark.

However, the fountain pen is not without its challenges…. They can leak. And be careful on airplanes with pressure changes!  They need filling…which, at least in my case, leads to multicolored fingers. They don’t play well with carbon copies. Fountains pens are inherently...fussy.

But hazards and challenges aside, in my experience, there is nothing more fun to use than a fountain pen. Sadly, in this day and age of the key board and touchscreen, I don’t use my pens as much as I’d like. This challenge is a chance to change that!

Rules:

1. Carry and use a fountain pen every day, 1-30 July.

2. Post a photo of the pen in this thread each and every day.

3. Post a photo of a use every day. The pen and use photo can be one and the same.

4. Don’t post pictures of personal or sensitive information—this is the intraweb, afterawl.

5. Have fun, use multiple fountain pens, use different inks!

To satisfy rule #3, there will inevitably be a need to come up with an artificial or superfluous use. This is an example of an artificial ‘use’ that satisfies rule #3:

So, why the use requirement?

Yeah, the regular 30-day pen challenge doesn’t require a use photo every day. Well, I find that boring. By including a use photo, we’ll get to compare inks and pen performances. We’ll get to see how our handwriting improves…one hopes…with use and practice. Most importantly, we’ll get to enjoy our pens as more than pocket cargo!

Don’t have a fountain pen?  Here’s a good excuse to delve into a world…or rabbit hole…of fascinating writing implements and the most personal form of expression I know. Choose your ink, choose the pen of your liking, chose your nib width. Many pens are very reasonably priced....many...far less so.... :o Don't worry, some of my favorites were very affordable. So, get yourself a dribbly nib and enjoy!  :tu:

Note: July is also the month for the Dean51 Challenge!

I will be participating in both. It seems to me that a traditional pen knife is the perfect pairing for a fountain pen. I'd normally be carrying one of each anyway.....

Keep in mind, a member can only earn one badge per 30-day period, so you'll need to choose which badge you want. I've gotten my Traditional Badge, so I'll be pursuing the 30-day Pen badge. But I have no doubt that I'll enjoy both!   :2tu:

Like I needed an excuse to expand the pen collection into fountain pens

I have none right now, I guess I'll see about that Twizbee Eco and the Kaweco Liliput...

I thought challenges like this didn't overlap with MT/knife challenges?

Doing this challenge and knife challenge simultaneously is not a problem because there is no overlap between a pen challenge and a knife challenge. However....you can only get one (1) badge at a time. If you are goin g to do the Dean51 challenge (and you should!) along with the Dribbly Nib, you'll need to choose which badge to apply for.

Choices, choices......

A great idea for a challenge Nix :hatsoff:

Fountain style pens and I do not get along, can not afford enough ink, tho the ink blotchy shirts were all the rage in the day with suit and sport coats covering the crime scene.  I was so much a fan of roller ball pens when Parker introduced!

Yet,  I will cheer you AWL on from the sidelines.

Hope no one gets stains that doesn't wash out

GOOD LUCK TO AWL !!!

If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

You can count on me being in the Dean 51, but no fountain pens for me please. I am however curious how you will work in the obligatory Nix cooking sub challenge.  :pok:

Hmmm... Interesting. Okay, I'll have a think.

Incidentally, have you seen the pic of James Dean up a tree? Why is it a famous movie star gets away with that kind of larks, but the moment I do, police are called? It's not fair is it?

Well, when James does it, he can pull it off. But....on you...yeah...the buckskin jacket will result in a Fashion 999 call every time.

I like fountain pens, but never wrote more than few words with one.
This challenge may present a good oportunity to change this situation ( and maybe improve my caligraphy)

This is shaping up nicely.  Being a lefty I always thought fountain pens were not for us  :twak:.  The right ink and a slight change in my angle of approach means few issues.  Hey, if you're gonna use fountain pens you're gonna have inky fingers  :D.  Just means you'll notice your dribbly nibbed brethren easily  ;).
