Day 30

Comments:

Been a good Challenge again this year. Enjoyed it. Good to see the Lambsfoot and Case Barehead Trapper make a good showing. Tl-29 and Sod Buster type knives put in a strong presence. Lot of nice Case and Buck knives showed up. Ulster Girl Scout knives at the end was icing on the cake. Happy trials till next year!     :tu:

Day 30

Rich did a fine job of articulating my thoughts on this challenge. I enjoyed seeing the excellent variety and reading the banter. This is a challenge that I would unhesitatingly take part in again!

I promised something special for the final day, and here it is: a Robeson electrician's knife. Every time I handle it, I think of who owned it previously and how it managed to survive at least one period in American history that forced most people to make do with what they had. (The tang stamp dates instead between 1917 and 1939.) Though someone scratched an X in the pile side cover, and the mark side liner and cover are lifting a little, it's held up exceptionally well over the years. I doubt I'll be in such great shape if I ever attain such an age. Though it's sharp enough to shave, it's not a user; it has transcended from tool to piece of history.

And finally a RR reserve large stockman, I remembered talking about this in last challenge, and Nate got one eventually, I hope the knife serve him as well as it did for me.

Yes, I used it exclusively for last year’s SAK-Alike challenge, and it easily handled everything I threw at it.

Day 30

I enjoyed this challenge more than I thought I would. I joined in order to spend some time with my TL-29s. As it turned out, it served as an enjoyable introduction into the world of traditional pocket knives. I still don't know a lot, but I do know much more than when I started.

Sos' Girl Scout knives, Gareth's pen knives, Hevy's Opinels and work knives, Rich's Bucks and his grandfather knives, GA1dad's Bull Nose, McStitchy's Case Barlow, the variety of knives LC, Dan, and Nix carried, nate's knives and cigars, Alan's Colonial TL-29 and Svord Peasant mini, the fantastic selections shared by Robert, David, and Steve. All of them were great to see. The only thing missing was Dean's participation. I didn't know Dean, but it is easy to see that he was mighty well liked by the folks who did know him.

So, to wrap up, here is what I take away from this challenge:

1) An appreciation for trads that I never had before
2) A newly developed love for the sodbuster and related work knives
3) A wallet that is now lighter than air
4) A new favorite knife:

Queen #70

I love the color. I love that the blade is D2. I love the blade shape. I love how it feels in my hand. I bought it used, with a crack at one of the pins and what appears to have been horrible attempts at sharpening it. I am no cutler, which makes me hesistant to sharpen my Bull Nose. But I have no qualms with sharpening a knife someone else has damaged. So, I now have it sharp enough to shave hair, and it will be riding in my pocket for the foreseeable future.

Thanks to Nix for hosting the challenge, and thanks to everyone who participated. It was fun.

P.S.
I am currently waiting on a new refrigerator, so my wife decided there would be no cooking at home until it arrives tomorrow. So, I have no cobbler this weekend. I do hope to share some pictures of my wife's cobbler next weekend.

I forgot about this photo:

These are almost all of my traditional pocket knives (I have 3 other cheap knives that were part of different buys). I have to admit that I have been a very bad boy this month. I didn't have any sodbusters before the challenge started. My wife may make me sleep in my shed for the whole of August

Day 31 +
I wanted to share how bad this challenge can be on one’s wallet.  These are the traditionals that arrived the month of July. Not ordered or bought in June for July’s event, or items that are on order awaiting delivery.

Group photo
Left Column
Case Copperhead
Case Jr Scout
Case Jr? Stockman
PAL Electrician
Case Bareheaded Trapper Wharncliff
Buck 250 Saunter

Right Column
Kershaw Culpepper
Rough Rider Workknife Wharncliff
Marvels Army knife (2)
Queen Canoe
Rough Ryder Canoe
* Case Swayback (Navy Blue) was returned for credit as result of manufacturing defect. Funded purchase of last four.

Yes, I did find things I like!  Still looking for a full size Sod Buster and a GEC Bullnose in red Micarta and couple more.  Just need to be patient.   Fortunately the next challenge is Buck Ranger, I have a few, unless the newer models start causing an itch🙄

@Alan5 - you are not alone, the flesh is weak. Ask for forgiveness, and do not, do not remove more than one of those sodbusters at a time for pocket duty. 😜. It is just my Soddy! No other description…
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Also, two lovely traditionals you shared today.

Day 31:

Another fun traditional challenge in the books. Hat's off to awl who participated and, especially Dean, who helped create such a strong Traditional Pocket Knife community here at MTo.  :hatsoff:

My word...y'awl have the most amazing collections of trads. If this thread doesn't give the casual reader the urge to carry a trad, I don't know what could. I had a blast and really appreciated the fantastic participation and enthusiasm for this one.

I say we do it again.......  ;)     Maybe burgers next year....and cake. Let there be cake!   :viking:
