I'm really looking forward to this challenge!!

Nix,,,, will we be having a cooking sub-challenge (or two) this year? Maybe the obligatory chicken cook within the first two weeks,,, then since fruit is ripening we could make a cobbler or other fruit dessert within the last two weeks? I'm open to any ideas.

I am all in for a cooking sub-challenge  :tu:

Though, if a challenge involves cobbler, I will cheat and present my wife's work as my own. I love her cobblers

Smoked pulled pork and peach cobbler sounds good to me.

In my opinion, yes...I think of an Opinel as the traditional knife of France. That is ultimately for Nix to decide.

I'd send you a traditional if I thought that A) it would arrive before Day 1 and B) you didn't have to deal with one of the worst customs systems on planet Earth. My information on the latter might not be up to date, though...
Thanks for the offer. But the chances of any knife or something else to arrive here before the first day of challenge is zero.
I'm waiting a package since March and no move from the customs yet.

Maybe I can join with a Opinel (thanks GA1dad for the info) or one of the old slipjoints used by my grandfather.
It may need a little restoration.

I was 100% correct about your customs system being horrible. A shame you have to deal with that kind of bullsmurf.

We did ribs last year, yeah?

A chicken sounds outstanding.   :tu:   And so does a fruity desert or pudding.  :ahhh

Would a rhubarb crumble or cobbler qualify?

Question: Does a Opinel qualifies for the challenge?

Opinels were accepted and made multiple appearances in last years Dean51 Challenge.

:iagree:  I'm not the final arbiter of what counts as a traditional, but we love Opi's, we've used Opi's, and Opi's are as traditional as it gets!  :tu:

That sounds right,,, but I've slept at least once since then,,,

A chicken or pieces of a chicken then? Leg quarters, wings etc.  And I'm also thinking anything goes for the dessert as long as it's fruity.

Sounds fruity enough to me

OK....sub-challenges on!

Sub-challenge One: Cook, photograph, and post a chicken dish. Bonus point for using and including snaps of your challenge knife. Submit your entry by day 15 of the challenge (so we have at least two weeks to drool and be envious....).

Sub-challenge Two: Cook, photograph, and post a cobbler, crumble, or crisp. Bonus points for using and including snaps of your challenge knife. Submit your entry by end of challenge. Please post in a manner that doesn't cause other participants to go into an insulin coma.

If there's a can of peaches laying around, I may be up for the cobbler. The chicken is a pass (if I cooked it, it would probably be rendered inedible).

Besides Opinels, what other nation's trads are allowed?

And is this a rotatable challenge as long as you're carrying a trad, or a pick one and stick with it dealy?

If I join I'd do the chicken challenge, I can cook a crumble but I don't like them so  :dunno:

Nix is the official judge of this challenge, but I think in the past pretty much any knife that could reasonably be classified as a traditional pocket knife qualified, regardless of what nation(s) it was traditional in.

As per the initial post in this thread, it is a rotatable challenge as long as you’re carrying a trad.

If you  will be so kind, I'll address your questions in a random order....

The sub-challenges are "throw down" challenges. The gauntlet is down, and yours to pick up or disregard as you choose. (But...can you make a crumble that you would enjoy....?  :pok: )

Defining a traditional knife can be tricky. Basically, if one of your grandparents might have carried it (or one that looked a lot like it), it's a traditional. Knives and tools that have their own challenges, e.g. SAK, do not qualify. Typically, but not exclusively, a trad will be a slip joint with one or more blades of a classic shape and style. Locking knives like the K55K or Opinel No.7 are considered to be traditional. A Benchmade folding clip point with an Axis lock is NOT a traditional, even though it looks more or less like a Buck 110. (Note: the Buck 110 has its own challenge and does not qualify for this challenge.) It would be impossible to come up with a list of all the knives that would qualify. If you think there might be a question that a knife you want to use will qualify, ask about it!

Note: I'm happy to render an opinion about what is or isn't a traditional (or anything else requiring an opinion), but I defer to the expertise of SteveC and David.

Yes, the Traditional challenge allows for rotating your daily knife, just so long as it is considered a traditional. However, if you are going for the coveted GEC badge, you must carry and photograph a GEC knife everyday. You can use different GEC's, but each day must feature a GEC.

If I didn't manage to make that more confusing, I'll be shocked.  ;)

Ask, ask, ask!

Absolutely!! The cooking sub-challenge is just something to play around and have fun with. It is not required to be completed. Some of us just enjoy cooking and the sub-challenges give us another fun way to enjoy it, and the camaraderie.

I have made many a canned peach cobbler over the years. Really like to add some blackberries to the peaches. As for the chicken,,, no problem. Trust me,, I have had a few instances where I took meat off the grill and tossed it into the woods,,, it happens.

I usually use one knife per challenge, but I'm tempted to mix it up for this iteration of the Dean 30-day Challenge.

I'm trying to think about it....but nothing is happening......

I didn't participate last year because I didn't have a big enough selection to really enjoy it imo, but over the last year they seemed to have multiplied to the point where that may not be the case anymore
