It's primarily the main blade, the spring for which appears to be the two smaller springs that service the smaller blades. This is my only three bladed trad, so I have no idea if that's a normal design, it just feels like if  I take the nail nick at the wrong angle it'd go very badly  :dunno:

Many of the old Whittler patterns have what are called split spring design.

If you want to soften the pull the best way is to ease the corner of the tang.

Dean provided a nice tutorial in this thread

On my RR Barlow both springs are strong.

On a 3 blade, the knife is 2-layer and the small blades share the back spring, opening both blade sharing back spring can result in it breaking.
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

Speaking of split back Whittlers   :D

Here is an English split back Whittler and a LL Pioneer Trapper both in some of GEC's finest jigged bone.

Yes, it's a Buck 501 / Squire.
This was a DLT special with micarta scales and S35VN steel.
The Squire is a beautiful little knife that I carry frequently :tu:

On this special run they seemed to miss the QC a bit though.

You've got a nice little Buck yourself there  :like:

Thank you  :hatsoff:

The back springs on this little guy are nail breakers!
Is that the one I sent you? If so, I didn't think the back springs were too bad. But then again, I like a bit stronger pull.

Caught myself a few strawberries.
If that's carbon steel, I'd say you're trying to force a patina!

And as awlways, y'awl are toting some wonderful trads! :tu:

Day 7

This one may not qualify; if that's the case, I'll post a make-up photo tomorrow. It'll get the pfrsantos stamp of approval regardless! It's a MAM Filmam 2B, a pretty darn good friction folder that can be had for under $10. Today I used it to free a few bandanas from their envelope.

The 501 is still on Buck’s site, $69.99, in 420HC steel, which is a good steel for pocket carry,

easy to keep and edge😜

C&C = Copper & Clad a speciality outsourced of Buck specials that they order from Buck.
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

I already have a 501 (and a 500, 503, and 505), but they're not as nice as the one McStitchy posted.

Of course, you can always order a custom 501 from Buck.  S30V is available, as are rivets.  They don’t have micarta scales, but have a number of other nice options.
