Today is the launch day for this new 1897 replica, and am pretty excited to get my hands on it today, and would like to share a few pix here for your viewing pleasure:

The replica came in layers of boxes.

A over simplified time line for Victorinox.  The company started in 1884, and for 1897 it wrote: "Karl Elsener I creates the Swiss Officer's & Sports Knife. The foundation for the iconic Swiss Army Knife is born".  And 2022 is the celebration of the 125th anniversary of the 1897 replica.

This is cute.  The knife is encapsuled inside a 'time capsule' and the package encourages the collector to "Pass it on. And on".

Inside the capsule, the knife in it's protective cloth sleeve.

A pictures of the knife itself.

Few more pictures comparing to a 4 layer Mountaineer.  As expected, every tool is a little different from the modern 91mm.  The peen job is great and no side-to-side or up-and-down play for each tool (of course, it's a Vic afterall).  If a regular 91mm pull strength is 5, then I would rate most tools here as 4-4.5, while the flathead as 5.

A "modernized" Elsener Schwyz stamp on the large blade, which is different from the olds ones I have seen in the historical pieces.  There are 9999 made, and each serial number is stamped on the liner behind the corkscrew, along with 1897 and 9999(total number made).  I am quite happy to see how thoughtfully it was put together, and although the packaging might be slightly less formal than the Victorinox or Wenger original soldier knife replica, I am guessing this packaging should last and fair better in time.

Looks great, Comis!  Thanks for sharing your review.

I have ordered and can't wait to get mine. Without a bail, it's guaranteed to be a knife I admire but don't carry.  Probably a good thing though, since if it had a bail I would've been tempted to buy two, one to use and one to keep!

Enjoy your new SAK!

Myron

I can totally see where you are coming from.  I used to romanticize with the idea of bail carry, until I careless dull the blade by letting it snap shut onto the bail.  It was not until the Soldier On that I got myself together and finally learn not to let that happen again in that challenge. :tu:

Same here.  For some reason, I guess because of what was suggested on the other thread on this knife, I had come to terms with a price of $400 USD.  When I woke up this morning and saw it was $500, I was a little bummed out, but then bought it anyway.  Sheesh.  I am a hopeless case.

I got it from a brick and mortar store, so it's actually even a bit more.  But I figured with shipping and all, it may just be around the same price for me.  AFAIK, the store I went to got 6-8 copies, but it was almost all gone within the day.  Even though it is expensive, it is still better than unobtainium with a triple marked-up price on ebay later.

I am sure you all will enjoy it too. :hatsoff:  The tools are different yet familiar, in some way, I felt the slender profiles are more 'elegant' than their modern versions.

Funnily enough I just received a email this afternoon regarding this new SAK
I’m not bitten by the ‘must have’ collector bug these days, BUT if you reckon it’s a good investment I’ll buy one. To pass to my  son
I have the replica Wenger version they released a few years back.
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

Isolated they look good but next to a real period piece they are a joke and very inaccurate and laughable. Real period pieces not  replicas for me. There will be a lot of apologists and rationalizers making accuses for replicas. just like with 1961 Soldiers. I want 60's soldiers not 90's soldiers that are a shell of what they were. True period pieces are all I will ever buy

Great writeup!

If I remember in the video, Victorinox said they tinkered with the backsprings to prevent fingernails getting ripped out. My M1908, when fingering it after I bought it tore my thumbnail up. Cleaning and oiling improved the action, but it's still very strong.

I plan to find an original, but I bet it will prove difficult. I found a 1920s era Wenger on Etsy for $100, and am debating saving up for it. I'd rather have an M1908 in good enough condition to be an EDC. The one I have now has really badly deteriorated scales and a blade that is at least an inch short and heavily sharpened down.

If there is anything one thing I did learn about knife/SAK collecting is that it best not to view them as 'investment', but tools that may depreciate in value over time.  Set aside a few brand of knives that has very strong demand and limited production capacity, it's just hard to predict which will go up and which will not.

I remembered the Wenger replica, that was a nice one.  My only slight complain is the leather/material they had chosen could deform overtime.  I wish they would choose some other material(or simply no fabric/leather) from now on, so they will last longer.

That's the sale pitch I got from the store, telling me to get more.

I don't have the real piece to compare, so can't comment on that.  But when comparing the 1890s first soldier knife(the black handle) they made to the replica they made many years back, I think they have made a decent effort trying to replicate that(I don't have a perfect pristine 1890s soldier, so I wouldn't know what it used to look like new anyway).  If anyone could show a decent copy of the period piece and make some measurements, I won't mind doing the same just for the fun.

I have a couple Vic products from the 1890s-1960s, and I surely could agree that some of them are real nail pullers.  But in retrospect, after learning and using some nail puller models from early GEC, I would probably rank those a firm 8 of 10 for the pull.  And collecting from that period is no easy task, either worn or expensive, sometimes even both at the same times.

I do too!  But given how each of those scales are hand grinded and non-standard peening, it maybe easier to find a custom job than to expect Vic bring it to 91mm.

$500 for old imperfect tools; it's conceptual or a scam.
It may seem some of these tools are a little outdated(after all it's a replica of a knife 125 years ago), but I think all of them are perfectly functional as they are intended.
