Suggestions for a multi tool please
on: July 30, 2022, 06:07:31 PM
I am on the hunt for a quality multitool for EDC. I am semi retired no and no longer do any field work but would like a good all around tool to be prepared for what may come up throughout the day. Through my research I have narrowed it down to the following models:

1. Leatherman Charge+ G10
2. Leatherman Signal
3. Leatherman Charge+ AL

Anyone have experience and feedback with these? I definitely like the replaceable cutter idea but I am open to other suggestions.  Thanks.

shane

It all depends on what you think your needs will be. I can validate any of the three you presented: g-10 has the better steel on the plain edge blade, and its bling/looks factor is unequal; the Charge has a better steel on the plain edge over the Signal ( and many other LTG tools for that matter, being 154cm for Charge, 420hc for Signal, Wave, Surge, Rebar, and others); has the same tools as the g-10 but at a more economical pricing. The Signal is a minimalistic tool, similar to the Skeletool, but having sturdier pliers (same as Rebar), and a saw.  So, again, depends on  owner's needs.

May I suggest the Rebar? Somewhat same tools but in a more compact, function-over-looks, timeless package. You'll have dedicated Phillips and flat drivers (bit an adapter kit is available if needed) and robust pliers head. You'll loose the diamond sharpener of the Charges and pocket clip (has double and single cut file; no provision for a pocket clip from the factory), but it is a very functional and rugged multi.

Or perhaps gp the MT.o way: get all three, and then some others and rotate between them!

Good luck on with your new tool, as any of them will be an excellent choice and will prove itself again and again when needed.

Thank you. I really like the idea of the diamond file. Not sure if I would or would not use it for sharpening things etc. but who knows. Will check out the rebar.  Also, I really like the looks of some of the black oxide models. I see that these models typically come with the molle sheath. Is the molle sheath better quality?  The nylon looks a little better due to the elastic loops on the side. I have a small fenix flashlight that would fit in one of those loops. Thanks again for the response.

There's also the Wave+: the same but basic tool loadout as the Charges, has the diamond sharpener/file and pocket clip adaptable (sold separarely) but, looses the hook on the SE blade and has 420hc for the steel of the PE blade. The chassis/handles are one-piece bent stainless steel, with no provisions to add or exchange scales. Comes only in silver or black oxide, with an occasional run of mixed colors (Black and Silver limited series comes to mind).

I'd rather have the regular or the premium nylon sheath over the molle, as the regulars have snap button closure, fit nicely on a belt (although I can run a belt through the molle straps, it runs to high for my taste) and, as you already know, also have side pockets/loops for small torches, a bit extender, a pen or marker, or a combination of them or other stuff. My experience also has been that the regular nylon material is better than the molle's, and the molle's hook and loop closure looses grip rather quickly.

Edit- Remember that you can buy the sheath separately so, don't let that hamper your decision (All my BO's sport modified regular and/or premium sheaths; the  MOLLE's are just for display/collect!).

You would get a lot more functional use out of a Charge. It’s a great tool. If you decide on a G10 you may want to jump on it.  The current models seem to be drying up. Not sure if LM plans to continue them in the future. There are a few red ones left on Amazon and a limited number of orange ones left. The Earth models seem to be gone forever.

I'll give a second vote for the Rebar. For my money, it has about the perfect Leatherman tool loadout. You'd just have to be okay going without outside opening tools.

I'll third the Rebar, great compact tool.
