Narrow 84mm with scissors and my Popular-X
on: July 09, 2022, 06:36:43 PM
The idea of modding a Popular-X has been in my head for a long time.(Just add scissors to a popular)
For years I've been searching unsuccessfully for a broken, narrow 84mm model with still usable scissors that is no longer worth restoring or collecting.
Some time ago another SAK guy gave me one of these. (Thanks again Bernhard!)  :salute:

Namely this old, rare model 74 with scales made of an unsuitable (as Victorinox later realized) plastic that crumbles and attacks the nickel silver plates, which often completely destroys these knives. That's why there is almost nothing left of these models. Unfortunately, I didn't take any photos of it before and during disassembly.

Well here is my Popular-X mod, I'm very happy with it! My new gentleman's knife for urban festivities.  :D

Comparison with a Model 74 Cellidor, Model 75 Horn and Model 76 Horn (all 84mm)

Comparison with a 93mm and wider 84mm Alox

What do you think about that?
Does "PopularX" fit as a name or do you have better suggestions?
Other owners of narrow 84mm models with scissors here? I would be very happy to see photos of it!

:like: Those are wonderful. I think the narrow 84m and 75mm sizes were great. I guess you used 74mm scissors? These are two of my favorites for carrying to suit and tie affair.

Those are two beauties! Thanks for showing here! :like:
No, I used the 84mm scissors from the disassembled 84mm knife.

Well.  That's just superb Sneider.     I love the slim 84mm frame size and a pair of scissors would suit me down to the ground.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Thank you guys.

Here are some comparison photos with the thin Popular and a Pocket Pal that is exactly the same thickness as my PopularX Mod at 8.5mm.

Not usually a massive fan of the popular but that’s a very elegant mod indeed.

Thank you guys.
The only difficult thing about this mod for me was just finding a pair of scissors that aren't too good to be used for a mod. Once you have the parts, all you have to do is put them together and rivet them.

@jaydar: I thought about it for a moment... Or mill 61mm OC scales yourself and anodize them red...  :ahhh

That Model 75 with the long file is wonderful.  Searching sakwiki and Google, I don't get anything for Model 75.  What else might this be called?

Thanks.

These are the model numbers from old Victorinox catalogues. I don't know any other names for these knives.

Here is a link to SAKWiki with the catalog from 1946. The  model 75 is on page 6
